Free Garmin OpenStreetMap, GMAPSUPP.IMG and MS/BC installer

Thats new to me , i was still thinking that every map need to be gmapsupp.img just with different Adresses and all that Parameters i had
in former time to ajust with differnt Tools and unlockers to get it working on my Oregon .

Different name > copy > work
Thats easy

Thanks
I've got a Garmin 78 and have about 6 different maps on the 16 gig micro SD card.
In the folder "Garmin" in the micro SD card name the maps separately as gmapsupp - gmapprom - gmapprom1 - gmapprom2 etc. All of them in the one Garmin folder.
When scrolling through the GPS after the card is loaded the name of the different map appears. CN North America, CN Europe etc.
This is the total extent of my GPS knowledge.

Thanks Nightrider for the great SEA maps and updates.

All the newer Garmin GPS'es including the Garmin 78 recognize maps with names other than gmapsupp, etc. So you can name the CN Europe map as CNE or any other name you fancy.

Restyled my map a little.

Removed the road styles from the Basecamp/Mapsource installer because the default looks better in Basecamp. Also changed to a light green background.

Made two versions of .img files for the GPS unit. One more suited for older units with roads styled to look close to Basecamp's default style. One more suited for newer units without roads styled because it seems to work better in general.

The files are available as individual downloads rather than one big file as before.

A couple of questions/requests:

I have the Garmin Thailand NT City Navigator 2016, whats the benefits of having this OSM map?
Does it have any dirt bike routes if so how are they indicated on the map? quite like the idea of recording my own tracks and uploading them. Will it show in all OSM latest maps if I do? Now is it possible for someone to have a laugh with this function. Lets say a trails that goes to a dead end, is it possible for someone to continue drawing this trail and make it look like it goes somewhere? Basically a lot of these roads, routes etc are not confirmed on OSM?!?
Install files for OSX (.gmapi) you no have?

Johnny,
You get get Mac versions of OSM here for a small donation http://mapas.alternativaslibres.es/account_en.php the Asia map is pretty large but you can download the sections you want, i still prefer the ESri map or Auke's excellent NT map as for me its easier to view but you will finds loads of info on each map. As for bogus trails being uploaded there has been reports of some unscrupulous characters doing that but i cannot confirm.

Good idea to have a copy of osm on your Montana and flick between maps for accommodation etc.

Here are two screenshots just north of Chiang Mai.

Use the map you like, it is a matter of taste. OSM has loads of dirt tracks. Tracks are rated on a scale from 1 to 5 (google 'osm tracktype'), that rating is appended to the track names. There is also a smoothness rating (google 'osm smoothness'), that rating is also appended to the track name. Observe that a smoothness rating of 'impassable' might be what an off-roader calls 'technical'. Grade 1 and 2 tracks are shown as a solid brown line, (same line is also used for unpaved residential roads). Grade 3 to 5 tracks are shown as a dashed line. You also have something called paths, in Thailand that is often used to represent single tracks. Motorcycle paths are showns as a dotted brown line. This is map is motorcyclists, that means that it will not route on roads where motorcycles are banned, like motorways around Bangkok. The estimated max speed is set to about 90 km/h. Anything you add will show up on all maps made from OSM data. Yes it is possible to add fake tracks. It is not a problem at the moment, the errors that exist usually comes from the use of old satelite images. This version does not have an OSX installer.

Thanks Bob and NR for the explanation. Will download and give it a go. If the direct download for a device is .img I can convert it to .gmapi for osx

Nice map, good detail and the integration of all the dirt roads is very handy (no switching between maps). That dayglow green for the jungles is too strong in my opinion. A more pastel green would make it more easy on the eyes. Whats with the horizontal lines on the OSM maps?

Thanks for the effort you've put into this, definitely going to give it a try

If you have a previous version already downloaded on your computer, does the new download automatically replace the existing map on your computer?

Yes. Make sure that you have closed Mapsource/Basecamp. Download using the "Install_Map_on-Computer" button and once downloaded double click on it. If an older version has been installed on your computer, you will get a message:

OSM replace.JPG

Click OK and the old map will be removed and the new version of the map will be installed.

Perfect, thank you.
