Not sure if this is the right place but it's about maps!

Prompted by Cap'n Slash's embedded maps and my own searching for places I read or hear about I am wondering why G'maps has bareley any places on it. Searching usually only pulls up the district:- https://www.google.co.th/maps/place/Chiang+Kham+District,+Phayao/@19.4927404,100.2346617,11z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x30d7ee4255dcb345:0x30346c5fa8a72e0!8m2!3d19.4987437!4d100.3251564

Looking back at the UK then Burma and Laos either side I see it's not a general map 'way it is' as Google shows plenty of towns etc elsewhere:- https://www.google.co.th/maps/@18.7412696,102.6204543,9z

I tried the old 'Here' maps and found them more usable in Thailand:- https://wego.here.com/?map=18.77298,99.3612,9,normal

But complete fiction in Laos:-https://wego.here.com/?map=18.70925,103.80517,9,normal

Page navigation a bit cumbersome, keyboard doesn't seem to work, but I will try it more often here.

Not sure, but I assume that the areas you search for are too large to show the details as with all the details the map would be cluttered. So zoom in to see more details as shown in the two screenshots of Chiang Kham district - zoomed out and zoomed in

The same is true for GPS maps where, when you zoom in, more details are shown - see attached screenshots of Oudomxay in Laos of my Laos GPS map with zoom levels at 50 km., 5 km. and 500 meter

Thanks but you are missing the point. G'maps Thailand has mainly 'things' such as buildings, services etc which only show up at higher zooms. There are hardly any 'places' - towns, villages etc which show up at lower zooms and enable an overview of the country as they do on maps for the other countries.
Your shot of Laos is a good example, with it showing most of the North I can easily figure out a route from Phongsaly to Khoun. In G'maps Th this is not possible.
