The route 1091, Offroad, 3030

Total distance 133 km
DSCF0159.jpg

I took the 1091 out of town and after 20-30 km took a right onto this dirt track signposted for a waterfall, possibly it was called the Sanian but I didnt make a note of it, I didnt find it either
DSCF0160.jpg

DSCF0161.jpg

At a fork in the road these are washing in the stream and tell me the waterfall is the right fork, I take the left to explore first as I know the right should take me back to the 3030

DSCF0164.jpg

Theres lots of tracks running off everywhere but I stay on the main one

Its a dusty scenic fun ride today

Out in the distance theres a building with a flag on it

The obligatory TV
DSCF0186.jpg

Perhaps someone can translate, A Thai in uniform rides up telling me this is Police and no photos, I follow him down the hill to a new National Park that will be finished and open in two years time
DSCF0187.jpg

Their small reservoir is full
DSCF0188.jpg

Lots of dogs here
DSCF0189.jpg

It is at N18.55.324 E100.31.793
DSCF0190.jpg

This Lady spoke a bit of English and it was her who told me to come back in two years time
DSCF0191.jpg

DSCF0192.jpg

A quick look around their small camp

DSCF0195.jpg

These kids know how to fend for themselves

DSCF0197.jpg

DSCF0198.jpg

DSCF0199.jpg

I ride on exploring another turning that ends here and I guess more building is going here

DSCF0201.jpg

DSCF0202.jpg

A rather large candle
DSCF0203.jpg

DSCF0204.jpg

DSCF0206.jpg

Riding back I take another track to my left
DSCF0208.jpg

DSCF0209.jpg

DSCF0210.jpg

DSCF0211.jpg

DSCF0212.jpg

I am riding along here knowing its going to be a turn around, but when you are riding in scenery like this who cares
DSCF0213.jpg

I come to a wooded area and wonder what those trousers are doing there
DSCF0215.jpg

Theres clothing stretched all along the track
DSCF0216.jpg

I turn round and ride back, near the start of this track it was wet and very slippery and as I was going downhill I didnt stop for photos
DSCF0217.jpg

This overflowing pond was the culprit of a lot of the water
DSCF0218.jpg

For what grip I was getting from my tyres I might as well have had road tyres on the bike
DSCF0219.jpg

Another offshoot finds more people working in the fields
DSCF0220.jpg

DSCF0221.jpg

DSCF0222.jpg

DSCF0223.jpg

DSCF0226.jpg

Back at the fork where I was told which way to the waterfall I notice this sign and I guess this is the NP that I have been to
DSCF0227.jpg

Well I certainly didnt see any of those animals riding out here today and quite happy not to have seen the striped one too
DSCF0228.jpg

DSCF0229.jpg

For some strange reason a lorry has tipped a load of these stones on the dirt track and this tractor is spreading them out
DSCF0230.jpg

DSCF0231.jpg

DSCF0232.jpg

Well there was no signs anywhere mentioning the waterfall as is often the case in Thailand, one sign on the 1091 and that was it, so where it is still remains a mystery
DSCF0233.jpg

DSCF0234.jpg

DSCF0235.jpg

Some more people stopped for their lunch along the way
DSCF0236.jpg

DSCF0237.jpg

DSCF0238.jpg

DSCF0239.jpg

The track is getting rougher in places but still not too hard going
DSCF0240.jpg

DSCF0241.jpg

DSCF0242.jpg

DSCF0243.jpg

I see a few of these look out posts with flags on today
DSCF0244.jpg

DSCF0245.jpg

DSCF0246.jpg

DSCF0247.jpg

Its now a long descent of rutted track covered in bulldust
DSCF0248.jpg

The engine braking of the KLX does most of the work but at times today going down very steep descents on bulldust it lost traction in 1st and kept locking up because the engine braking was too great, 2nd gear was needed to overcome this
DSCF0249.jpg

DSCF0250.jpg

DSCF0252.jpg

Just past these people I meet the mystery track I rode on five days ago and now know exactly where I am
DSCF0254.jpg

I ride back to the start of the 3030 and take a dirt track to my left to explore if it goes to Ban Santiphap
DSCF0255.jpg

DSCF0256.jpg

It starts off alright and its going in the right direction
DSCF0257.jpg

I take two water crossings and cross a narrow bridge
DSCF0258.jpg

But I dont fancy crossing this as theres a drop if things go wrong and no one out here to help
DSCF0259.jpg

I walk on for a look and its double track for about 100 metres
DSCF0260.jpg

DSCF0261.jpg

Then turns to this very narrow single track
DSCF0262.jpg

DSCF0263.jpg

Then after about another 100 metres the track just turns to nothing and drops into the water at this weir, I am certainly glad I didnt bother crossing that bridge
DSCF0265.jpg

I walk back to the bike sitting patiently and turn around and ride back
DSCF0267.jpg

I explore more side tracks but two go nowhere and this one goes up high but is probably only access to get the crops
DSCF0268.jpg

DSCF0269.jpg

The view from up here though is absolutely awesome
DSCF0270.jpg

DSCF0271.jpg

DSCF0272.jpg

DSCF0273.jpg

DSCF0274.jpg

DSCF0275.jpg

DSCF0276.jpg

Time to ride back down this very steep descent
DSCF0277.jpg

Just before reaching the 3030 I take a right and this road looks promising
DSCF0278.jpg

I can see it going on in the distance and I will carry on exploring this one another day as now its time to return to Nan and eat
DSCF0284.jpg

150 Baht for this very tasty filling pizza at the Nan Steakhouse

Colin

Those tracks just seem to go on & on don't they, wow, what a ride.

I was kind of wondering if you might have jumped in some of that water today to get rid of all that dust, just like those kids.

Fabulous reports, keep them coming, enjoying every image & comment.

Stay away from tigers, although this week in the Thai news, a bull terrier killed his owner so maybe stay away from wide jawed, inbred, one thing in mind staff's & pits too!

Ally

It was certainly a very enjoyable ride Ally.

I saw that about the pitbull, horrible, but I have always found staffs to be friendly dogs

This is good stuff. Been enjoying browsing your website recently but especially appreciate a long, non-tarmac report like this for a bit more "off the beaten track" feel. Very cool.

I imagine the addition of GPS and the new bike are really opening up tons of opportunities to keep exploring.

Fascinating what your finding in the Nan region, really interesting report Colin, see you tomorrow evening, map of today's route.
