The route 101, 3020, 3052, 1091, 1172, 5086, 4002, 3033, 2032

Total distance 242 km

I go to the Honda dealer for an oil change once they have managed to get the knackered sump plug out plus a new headlight bulb, while they are doing this I browse on the shops computer.

A big mistake as when I got the bill it was for only 170 Baht, 120 for the oil and 50 for the bulb, I never got a new sump plug, oh well at next weeks oil change I will watch and insist on one.

I notice my tyres are virtually worn out and some of these rough mountain roads around Nan will quickly wear the remaining tread out so a new pair were ordered in.

I ride along the 101 to past Wiang Sa and take a right onto the 3020 at N18.31.438 E100.33.323
DSCF1693.jpg

A quieter ride with much better scenery now that I am off of the 101
DSCF1694.jpg

Today is the first time of the many times that I have ridden here that I actually know the road number courtesy of the gps

This very friendly dog comes running over
DSCF1700.jpg

After stroking and making a fuss of him I tell him to steer well clear of Honda Phantoms if he wants to see old age
DSCF1701.jpg

DSCF1702.jpg

DSCF1703.jpg

This is another road that never gets mentioned and if I ask people if they have rode along here nobody seems to know of its existence, a shame as its a fun fifty one km road.
Admittedly its not on my maps but believe me it does exist
DSCF1704.jpg

DSCF1706.jpg

In the hills the gps no longer shows any road
DSCF1707.jpg

DSCF1709.jpg

DSCF1710.jpg

I am over the highest parts and now on the descent towards Ban Luang
DSCF1711.jpg

Now a road is showing on the gps and I am now on the 3052
DSCF1712.jpg

DSCF1713.jpg

I reach the 1091 at N18.50.995 E100.26.189 after a fun fifty one km ride
DSCF1716.jpg

I turn right onto the 1091 for 2.4 km then at N18.51.550 E100.27.311 I take a left onto the 1172
DSCF1717.jpg

This worker is certainly enjoying his break

DSCF1720.jpg

DSCF1721.jpg

The asphalt surface finishes after 7.2 km at N18.54.257 E100.27.811 and I ride along the rough track for another five km
DSCF1722.jpg

DSCF1723.jpg

Such a lovely quiet ride along here
DSCF1724.jpg

That sign says Doi Pha Chang Wildlife Sanctuary
DSCF1725.jpg

I come to a water crossing and I easily ride through
DSCF1726.jpg

On the other side and the remains of the bridge or what was going to be a bridge
DSCF1727.jpg

I ride on but at a fork I stop and mark it as N18.56.273 E100.27.328 for future reference as according to my Thinknet map and my gps this should go on and join the track that links the 1082 at Sop Khun with the 1188 near to Pong
DSCF1730.jpg

I ride back and at the water crossing see that there was a narrow bridge but I prefer to ride through the water
DSCF1732.jpg

DSCF1735.jpg

On the way back I ride through rather than bypass the main village stopping for some photos
DSCF1736.jpg

I imagine 2516 was the year of construction, is the 35,000 the cost of it back then?
DSCF1737.jpg

I can hear the kids in the classroom but theres no sign of anyone
DSCF1739.jpg

DSCF1744.jpg

DSCF1745.jpg

Riding back towards the 1091 I take a left onto the 5086 to cut off a corner, this is a pleasant small road that I have never noticed before and it joins the 1091 at N18.52.026 E100.28.076
DSCF1749.jpg

Along the 1091 at N18.52.192 E100.33.159 I take a right onto the 4002
DSCF1750.jpg

DSCF1751.jpg

DSCF1752.jpg

That is one steep climb up there
DSCF1754.jpg

After 15.6 km of asphalt the road turns to dirt at N18.47.773 E100.32.411.
This is two or three km further than last time I rode here
DSCF1755.jpg

DSCF1756.jpg

On the ride back I ride up to a couple of villages full of friendly people
DSCF1757.jpg

DSCF1758.jpg

DSCF1759.jpg

This gentleman spoke very good English and told me they were getting the black beans out manually, these are the beans sometimes found in Khao Lam

DSCF1761.jpg

DSCF1762.jpg

DSCF1763.jpg

The nice twisty road that winds through the hills
DSCF1764.jpg

DSCF1765.jpg

Plus the brilliant scenery
DSCF1766.jpg

I ride back to the 1091 turning right towards Nan
DSCF1768.jpg

At N18.52.542 E100.35.246 I take a right onto the 3033 to Ban Mai Nai Fan
DSCF1769.jpg

Upon reaching the village an unexpected sight awaited me, I am always being told by lots of people here that I am the only person who ever uses a public phone.
Now I have proof that there is at least one other person who also uses them
DSCF1770.jpg

DSCF1771.jpg

I mark the village at N18.51.473 E100.34.734 just under four km from the 1091
DSCF1772.jpg

Time to ride back and again upon reaching the 1091 ts a right towards Nan
DSCF1777.jpg

At N18.52.145 E100.36.072 I take a right towards Ban Huai Mon on the 2032
DSCF1778.jpg

DSCF1779.jpg

DSCF1780.jpg

While the parents are working with the maize the kids are happily playing with the discarded bits
DSCF1781.jpg

Foods on the go here
DSCF1782.jpg

A lot of chicken necks bubbling away in that oil
DSCF1783.jpg

DSCF1784.jpg

The end of the paved road at N18.49.575 E100.35.540 after 6.6 km
DSCF1786.jpg

I have never before seen a bike balanced like this its on the centre stand but tipped up so only one of the centre stand prongs is on the ground and the side stand keeps it from falling over.
I guess its to aid the water in dripping off from its wash
DSCF1787.jpg

A game of badminton is in progress and a long bamboo resting on the lads shoulder acts as the net.
From here its back to the 1091 and home to Nan after a very enjoyable day riding old favourites plus a new one
DSCF1788.jpg

Tonys Place special today was roast stuffed loin of pork with gravy, onions plus a double portion of saute potatoes for 149 Baht.
