If you're visiting Sam Neau then a visit to Vieng Xai is a must, it's a very laid back place with a small village feel, there are no high rise buildings other than the enormous government building being constructed.

High on my priority list was to visit the cave complex, although there are some 400 caves in the region only a handful are open for visitors, to visit you must first get a ticket for the audio tour which is twice daily, the ticket office is located at N20.40186 E104.22743

Inside the ticket office is some useful information on the region and you are give a map to guide you, the tour should take you around 4 hours depending on group size.

Normally i'm not into the guided tourist stuff but the audio tour is brilliant and the english speaking guide that accompanies you is excellent.
