Hello everyone,

Best wishes for 2022.

This is my first post on this forum. I love to read other people’s posts so time for me to pay back.

I have a Honda ADV 150 and a KLX 220. The KLX started his life as a 150 but doing the Elephant trail mostly in first gear was quite frustrating. I’m very happy with the upgrade, it’s a completely different machine now and not afraid of doi’s anymore. Longer tours of mostly asphalt I prefer the comfort of the ADV. Brings me there also although at slower pace on dirt but… I’m not in a hurry.

My buddy Mark and I decided to go to Nan. Years ago, I read a post called “Chiang Mai to Nan as the crow flies” or something like that and for a long time I wanted to do that. So looking at a number of maps I found the shortest road to Nan, 300 km of which about 20% dirt roads and 30% quiet country roads.

The 28th we left, Mark on his CRF 300 and me on the ADV. We planned to meet at 08:00 in a coffee shop in Mae Kampong. We had not counted on the crowd of selfies maniacs that early, so we had to weave our way thru the crowds at a slow pace. After a short break for coffee we did the steep climb to Kew Fin which was the only part of the trip that the ADV struggled with.

We had no way of knowing how good the dirt roads were so did not stop often for pictures. I will try to do better next time. There was only one sketchy part in the whole trip, after we crossed highway No 1 a steep drop on wet red clay. We glided our way down without any accidents but decided not to take this route on the way back. Good decision because it rained a bit when we came back the 30th.

The roads were good. Better than expected this early after the rainy season.

We arrived in Nan at about 3 PM.

The next day we did some sightseeing in and around Nan

Probably don't have to post many pictures of Nan. Most members will have visited this city. Nice temples though.

Even the big guy was looking forward to 2022.

The 30th we went back and decided to take a different route. Close to Phayao it started to rain just a short shower making the 120 slippery enough for some accidents.

Soon it cleared up. The roads parallel to the 1035 are made for biking. No traffic and views all around.

I ended the year well with a flat tire 10km from home. Could have been a lot worse in the middle of nowhere on the first day of the trip so don't complain too much. Just a little, the tire is a write off. I imported the set from abroad because I did not liked the stock. Only did 9K on it :(

So that's was the Nan trip. Quite enjoyable.

Cheers

Don't go too fast but I go pretty far

Nice report - thanks. I did a Nan loop a couple of weeks back - to pick up a mate and his rather broken bike. We did the usual 118, 120, 1251, 1091. Google maps says 292 km and 4 hours 50. We managed it in 3 hours 30 - and would have been quicker had it not been for the Bangkok tourists - the worst of whom was cornering at 10 kph. I kid you not - 10 kph.

I'd like to do that dirt trip - as we're wanting to do a bit more exploring around the Nan area.

Good to see you here Repesteeltje; nice report.
What are your overall impressions of the ADV?

No way I can do that in your time. I stay well away from highways. They scare me.

Hi 2wheels, Love the bike. Like riding on a cloud. Can handle some dirt/off road. Fast enough away from traffic lights to keep the crowd behind. Top speed is about 110. I prefer 80 anyway so no issue. I often go cruising around Lamphun and it's just made for it. I live outside Sankhamphaeng and rather take the ADV than the car or the KLX into town. Can store all the missus' groceries in the bike. Would love to try out the ADV 350 but probably would stick with the 150. Long time ago I had a Transalp 600. Considered by many a boring bike because it was so predictable. The ADV is the same.

"Like riding on a cloud."
Wow!
Is that the original suspension set-up?
Thanks for the response.
Maybe someone in CNX has an ADV350 for rent.
