After all the recent shake-ups in SE Asia regarding foreign motorcycle entry, Myanmar has now also thrown its hat in the ring.

3 days ago, some riders requests, made by a licensed Myanmar travel agent, to ride from Mae Sot, Thailand, through Myanmar and exit into India were refused, no foreign motorcycle can currently transit Myanmar.

They have hinted that this is to do with the new Asian Highway passing through Myanmar and they are finalizing the vehicle laws.

If that is true, hopefully just a temporary prevention.

It's kinda frustrating that Myanmar and China - which borders mainland SE Asia from the rest of the world - are both restrictive when it comes to overland travels. So motorcycle travellers from Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam are restricted to, well, those same named countries.

Hopefully the Myanmar entry is only temporary until they sort out the new Asia Highway laws through Myanmar.

Not good news for motorcyclists at all. One country after the other "falls" to new laws. First Thailand (although it is still possible to transit the country by motorcycle with conditions), then Laos at least coming into Saiyabuli and now Myanmar, which seems the most restrictive of all because not even tours are allowed. I read that in recent times, Myanmar has closed it's Chinese and Indian borders only to reopen them with conditions that require foreigners to exit through the same border they entered, if coming from India through Tamu or China through Mu-se. Perhaps this is why this tour was not permitted to transit Myanmar for India?

I was reading about the tour that went to Mong La recently. Will similar tours also be restricted for now, or does this rule only apply for transit of the country to a third country?
