If you have a few hours to waste and a lot of patience, visit the 1150 between Phrao & the 118 @ Mae Kachan.

Today I rode 1001 to Phrao, enjoyed a coffee at the 7/11 & thought I would also enjoy the ride through the mountains over to the 118.

Wrong!

They are re-surfacing the road and as luck would have it, the sky opened as well & I was riding at 20 – 30km/ph at best !

Anyway, it was a good start with a ride up the wonderful 1001 & a drying out route home on the 118 in glorious sunshine

I came across those road works by surprise too, a few months ago. Should be great twists and views when done!

Goes west of Phrao also - over to @10k north of Chiang Dao. I like that bit going through the karst rock bit things... Used to like 118, 1150, 107, 109, then either Chiang Rai or back to Chiang Mai. The 1001 is nice but I always thought it was a bit slower riding cos of all the villages/built up bits. Good roads!

Edit: I remember the road up from Phrao to south of Fang as interesting. Slow and windy - and maybe in a worse state now, but worth a look. (Not a fast road.)
