I've seen it for years and tolerated it when people rode their small bikes on the right side of the road, and even the police does it once in a while. Sometimes even car drivers do it when the next U turn is "too far away".
Now I moved to a new place and I would have to go a few hundred meters to the next traffic light, then turn around a go back to get to my soi. Of course I don't do that, I ride appr. 50m on the wrong side, slowly, with my right turn signal on, and save me some time.
But I get a lot of "stink eye" and yesterday one old man yelled at me, even though there was lots of space, it wasn't tight or dangerous.
I just went on and thought: "What do you think where I learned this?"
Same with running red lights, they all do that down here, so I do it, too. Running a red light should definitely be illegal, but I've seen people riding on the wrong side of the road for years and they act as if it's the most normal thing to do.
That got me thinking that it may be legal - who knows, maybe there some "small print" in their traffic laws that it may be okay.
Does anybody know what the official situation is? Is to legal to ride on the right side of the road anywhere, in town, out of town, or is it just something that Thai people do and the police is not interested in doing anything about it?
The way I know life in Thailand I'll be stopped one day and have to pay a fine because it's obviousely illegal but the locals get away with it.
