Threatening clouds but no rain leaving Chiang Mai which was a huge bonus

Little bit of drama on the way down there, I clipped Clinton's pannier not expecting him to brake and ended up--side-down in the verge, no one hurt and we carried on

2 vehicles traveling down with us, I hope they see where we've pulled in before a truck hits it

From Utteradit - R 1143 is a beautiful ride down towards Dan Sai & Loei, good surface and great curves. We get to the Rungyen Resort in Dan Sai nice and early, which is 23km e/ne out of Dan Sai.

Being the Phi Ta Khon ghost/ mask festival weekend ( upcoming-rides/2012-phi-ta-khon-festival-june-22nd-23rd-2012-t2045.html ), accommodation is at a premium around Dan Sai, we paid 1,600 Bht for these aircon. rooms, which we thought should be 500-700 Bht at the most.

Then off to the Phi Ta Khon festival, which has been covered in this link: upcoming-rides/2012-phi-ta-khon-festival-june-22nd-23rd-2012-t2045.html

1,000's of small bikes of all description flood to the festival

Every 500 meters there seems to be repairs underway

Most of them camp - the big new PTT makes an excellent bathroom

After a few hours of the festival, we all headed north to Tha Li, on the Thai/ Laos border. Sukie was up there with his GF Panadda, they stopped by our friends house for a chat in Tha Li.

It was the first time we'd been to Opal's house in Tha Li, huge piece of land with their own fish farm etc....

According to Opal, who is from Tha Li, this is the best restaurant in Tha Li

It's east of town at this junction off of R 2115 in Tha Li

Everything looked pretty cheap

Even has a clean aircon room

Interesting tourist map of the Loei province on the wall

We gave the lady our food orders, it would take a while to prepare, so we all went off to the local market

The smells from this were torture while waiting for our food to be cooked

The odor from this fish concoction made you lose your appetite

Back at the restaurant, right next to the table, all your electricians should like this

All wired into the top (ie no fuse or breaker) with open conductive panels - 3 phase, 600 volt, 60 amp with no cover at all

Basically if you touched it or fell on it you'd be dead, we talked we the owner about it it and got "Yes yes, be careful".

The resort we stayed at in Tha Li was 500 Bht a night for an aircon chalet

If you stay there try get a chalet on the RHS as you go in, they are bigger

This was the spectacular view from my chalet looking NNE

This was the view from Con's room which was quite amusing

We decided to take the border route back NW towards Chiang Mai via Nan, roughly 600km.

R 2195, west of Tha Li along the border is nasty, lots of unmade sections that almost resemble a dirt road, lots of pot holes, it wasn't much fun for the ER-6's. There are some great views, especially in rainy season from where R 2195 joins R 1268.

Further north, the three-way, R 1268 junction always raises some eyebrows

If you come along R 1091 west of Nan don't miss the viewpoint that isn't visible from the road (it's up a dirt slope). Great views in rainy season

Sure looks like a colourful Festival.
Some great scenery, as usual.
Some great bikes too.
Those condom trees can usually be found outside Guest House rooms; a bit like the beer trees in Oz.
Glad you were unharmed after that mishap Phil.
Very nice report, thank you. And more coming?

1,154km and no rain! Quite amazing for the end of June in Thailand - That's the end I'm afraid 2 wheels.
