Trying to get from Chiang Mai to Vientane by air.

Are people usually flying directly into Vientane or is it better to fly to Udon Thani / Nong Khai and cross the border by land?

A lot less hassle to fly direct to Vientiane. Midnight Mapper took the overnight bus from Chiang Mai to Udon a few weeks back, I think it was 800 Bht, he said is wasn't so bad. Then a quick bus north to Nong Khai to cross the border into Vientiane, Laos.

Any recommended airlines, Phil? Either the Lao Airlines website is acting up or they really don't have direct flights CNX-VTE.

Looks like Lao Airlines only flies from Chiang Mai to Luang Prabang now. From Chiang Mai you'll have to connect through Bangkok.

Mac - I was pretty sure they did too, but according to their route map & putting those flight routes in to their flight booker on line they don't?

Lao Airlines does have a C. Mai-Vientiane flight, a friend took it in early May, last month.

Yes, they have a flight from Chiangmai to Luang Prabang and after a short stop the plane then continues to Vientiane under a different flight number. Have taken this flight several times in the past. Or take Nok Air from Chiangmai to Udon Thani (2 flights a day at 7 in the morning and 5 in the afternoon) and then take the airport bus from the airport to Nongkhai (they will drop you off at the bridge if you ask nicely) and on the other side take public transport to Vientiane

With the battery dis-connected and all the fuel out of the bike, I wonder if you could get a bike (250-400cc dirt bike) on its side in the planes cargo?

Kinda crazy that I can fly to phnom penh for about half the price of the small hop to vt tho..

Huge issues with shipping any thing that's had fuel inside it..

I had a mega hassle importing the race prepped fire blade engine, even without fuel cells, carbs, etc..

Special declarations needed, inspections, just loads.
