Considering September is one of the wettest months during the SW Monsoon, we were taking a bit of a chance going camping. All of our tents were waterproof so what the heck.

We had two spots in mind at the Thai/ Myanmar border, an easy one if it was pouring down and another in a more secluded area.

R 4015 txt by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

As of 22nd September, 2015, R 1095 east of Pai is in a horrible state

RIMG2142_edited by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

Several 5km sections of roadworks

RIMG2144_edited by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

Lots of uncleaned sections still covered in slippy mud

RIMG2145_edited by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

New bridge construction

RIMG2146_edited by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

The odd car crash even on the good bits

RIMG2147_edited by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

Some unmade sections on R 1095 east of Pai

RIMG2148_edited by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

If this had been wet it would have been good for us

RIMG2151_edited by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

A lot of it had been watered to keep the dust down

RIMG2154_edited by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

Some not

RIMG2156_edited by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

Back on the tarmac and Sned's Multistrada is off

RIMG2157_edited by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

Through the police checkpoint

RIMG2158_edited by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

Some good road at last, Sneds chasing Steve

RIMG2159_edited by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

Mr. F through the switchbacks

Sergio followed by Steve

RIMG2166_edited by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

West of Pai the road is much better

RIMG2167_edited by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

RIMG2168_edited by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

There are still a few roadworks west of Pai on R 1095

RIMG2169_edited by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

Drink break at the viewpoint

RIMG2179_edited by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

Being dry, we decided to give the campsite at the north end of R 4015 a try, right on the Myanmar border. R 4015 was under some major rennovation too

RIMG2181_edited by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

Mr. Sned's Super Corsa track race tires were hanging in there on the dry red clay, if it rained overnight, it might be slow getting out of here

RIMG2184_edited by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

RIMG2185_edited by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

Quite surprising how much was still unmade

RIMG2188_edited by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

A few muddy puddles nothing too bad

RIMG2189_edited by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

The dry hardpacked stuff was fun

RIMG2190_edited by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

Sergio on the V-Strom 650

RIMG2192_edited by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

Roadmakers on the blind corners

RIMG2195_edited by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

About 70% was sealed on R 4015

RIMG2196_edited by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

If you havnt been up this road it has some unusual views

RIMG2197_edited by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

RIMG2198_edited by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

Small villages all the way north

RIMG2202_edited by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

RIMG2145_edited1 by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

Lots of blind corners and a thin road so you cant really blast along

RIMG2205_edited by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

RIMG2208_edited by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

Getting close to the border, checkpoints start

RIMG2210_edited by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

Up at Ban Khong (Tai Yai) we look for the camp site

RIMG2211_edited by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

Took a little bit of finding, a quick survey, the grass was a bit long, maybe attracts some snakes, but on the whole should be fine

RIMG2213_edited by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

RIMG2215_edited by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

Mr Kelly with some mud splashes

RIMG2216_edited by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

Let the camp making begin

RIMG2217_edited by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

Bob's 2 man MSR Hubba Hubba, one of the best lighweight tents you can buy

RIMG2222_edited by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

All set up before dark, the snorers staying at the ends of the group setup

RIMG2223_edited by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

Time to get medicated

RIMG2224_edited by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

We had steaks, sausages, chicken wings, baguettes, potatoes, Jack Daniels, vodka & red wine. The BBQ chef taking care of things

RIMG2227_edited by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

RIMG2228_edited by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

A chap turned up with this t shirt on which caught our eyes

RIMG2234_edited by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

A decent night sleep in the cool, mountain air. Everything was wet which is a pain when you have to pack it away like that

RIMG2235_edited by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

Back south on R 4015

RIMG2236_edited by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

The clouds still rising

RIMG2237_edited by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

RIMG2241_edited by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

RIMG2258_edited by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

RIMG2261_edited by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

Through the buffer border checkpoint

RIMG2265_edited by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

RIMG2269_edited by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

The red clay was still dry on the way out

RIMG2270_edited by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

Headed south on R 4015/ downhill, you get better photo opportunites

RIMG2284_edited by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

Idiot proof gas pumps

RIMG2285_edited by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

RIMG2287_edited by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

More dirt sections

RIMG2292_edited by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

Looks like it would be slick in the rain

RIMG2296_edited by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

RIMG2298_edited by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

RIMG2300_edited by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

Especially here

RIMG2304_edited by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

One lane finished caused some headaches

RIMG2305_edited by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

Back down at R 1095/ Mae Hong Son Loop road and decision time for the next nights camping

RIMG2308_edited by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

MHS for breakfast and we would decide there... Park Rangers on their way back to MHS

RIMG2309_edited by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

The Salaween River Restaurant & Bar does the best food in Mae Hong Son

P_20150923_101000.jpg by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

Huge breakfasts with home made bread

RIMG2310_edited by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

P_20150923_105533.jpg by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

Then off south on R 108

RIMG2312_edited by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

Just as we reached Khun Yuam it poured with rain, perfect time to duck into the Japanese WW II museum

RIMG2315_edited by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

RIMG2313_edited by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

RIMG2314_edited by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

We'd decided on camping in Mae Sariang. Jonny knew a potential spot on the western side of the Mae Yuam River in Mae sariang

RIMG2316_edited by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

It looked doable, we had a river to bath in, with all the standing water around and cow dung, it looked like it would be mosquito hell at dusk so we decided against it

RIMG2318_edited by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

Back out to survey another potential camping spot Bob had seen

RIMG2323_edited by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

Right next to the bridge Bob had spotted a flat grass area below the Wat

RIMG2327_edited by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

Didnt look like private property, close to town, river to bath and even a toilet, looked perfect

RIMG2329_edited by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

Some excitement from the young monks once they realized what we were doing

RIMG2332_edited by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

RIMG2333_edited by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

We put the tents up and non one seemed to be bothered by it

RIMG2335_edited by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

Serg down by the river

RIMG2338_edited by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

38C lets hope it cools down later

RIMG2340_edited by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

River was delicous and cool

RIMG2341_edited by Triangle Golden 007, on Flickr

We were listening for banjo's

Thats it --- 2 great days camping

..

great time! thanx for the pix Phil :DD

Great trip and nice camping area at Ban Khong Tai Yai at the end of Rd 4015. Another nice camping area is just a bit south-west of Ban Pang Ung/ Ban Na Pa Paek (Coordinates N19.498566° and E97.905896°) off Rd 3011/5001 north of Mae Hong Son but that can get very crowded during the Christmas/New year period with Bangkok people enjoying the cold air
