Great trip !! That was some bad ass mud riding..... Watched the video, looks like you guys have learned the same as me, when the ruts get big, it now becomes your friend. I am also happy to know there are other people as crazy as me. I bet Phil was wishing for a lighter bike than his 400 in the bad mud sections.

I just found out here the other day that 2-3 years ago some guys did a similar trip and they ended up 3 months in a Burmese prison before they were deported -minus their bikes....

But still, awesome trip!!!

Our trip was very much sanctioned by the Thai border control and we were completely controlled within the Loi Taleng military camp which directly adjoins the Thai border. Even if we wanted to, we could not have gone anywhere near Burmese government forces and I got the sense that our host at the military camp was being held accountable for our well-being and shit would have hit the fan with his Thai military friends had we fallen into any danger.

The guestbook at the Military Public Relations guy's house we stayed at was filled with foreign names and throughout our evening at the camp, we were inundated with print, video, and verbal propaganda. As far as war-zone adventures go, we were very much on the beaten path.

This all seems to be the Thai military's way of supporting the public relations cause of the Shan State Army. You're never more than 1-2 km from Thai military forces and they know where you are at all times. They would not let you into the camp (Thai military controls is right at the entrance) if you were in any danger.

We've had 2 officers from the Shan State Army based in Loi Tai Leng (Shan State) staying with us. One of the officers wives gave birth to a boy 2 weeks ago who's nick-name is "Ford", this was the first time he's seen his new baby.

What sort of permissions/permits did you have to get to get in? Is it the same as crossing over in Mae Sai on those temporary passes?

To get in officially, you need to go to Mae Hong Son & get a permit from the MHS Government office. The level of intensity in Shan State has being blowing hot and cold for several months, one of the most senior officers in the Shan State Army stays at my place regularly when he's in Chiang Mai, I would say I probably see him every 6 weeks, so we get good first hand updates of the current political situation there.

Not so long ago ( 4 months), there was a heated stand-off NW of Mae Sai (in Shan State) & at that time no foreigners were allowed to cross the border into Loi Tai Leng. There's 2 ceremonial days coming up, in December & In February, these should be easy to get to, i'll get the exact dates.

If you're on a dirt bike, its highly recommended that you take the "western" route north from R 1095 (MHS loop road) to Loi Tai Leng (Thai/ Shan-Myanmar border). This was you miss all of the military checkpoints apart from the one at the border with Loi Tai Leng.

The 2013/ 66th anniversary of the Shan State National Day (sponsored by the RCSS (Restoration Council for Shan State)) & The SSA (Shan State Army), will take place on 7th February, 2013, at Loi Tai Leng.

5th & 6th February, 2013 - Guest reception

7th February, 2013 - Shan State Ceremonial Day


There's a good chance you'll get in if you go early, if you have a problem at the military checkpoint, try and get someone to fetch "Philip" (not me), who is an officer in the Shan State Army.
