If your UK passport is almost full, the rules have changed for renewal (you can no longer make a renewal application by mail to the UK Embassy in HK).

You now have to make an appointment with the UK visa application center in Bangkok, Thailand & be interviewed in person, then the renewal application will be sent to the Passport processing center in the UK. It will take 4-6 weeks to recieve your new UK passport. You do NOT need to surrender you OLD UK passport.

Those Laos & China full page immigration visa's eat up your passport quickly.

From the UK.Gov website below:

How long it takes

Your application will take at least 4 weeks from when it’s received by Her Majesty’s Passport Office in the UK.
Applications may take longer if:

  • Her Majesty’s Passport Office needs to ask you for more information or documents
  • the photographs you send are rejected
Don’t book travel until you have a valid passport. If you need to travel more urgently, you may be able to apply for an Emergency Travel Document.
Cost

You’ll have to pay a fee for your passport and a courier fee of £23.01. The courier fee pays for your passport to be sent securely to the UK Visa Application Centre where you applied for you to collect.
Passport typePassport feeTotal to pay (including courier fee)
Adult standard 32-page passport£128.00£151.01
Adult jumbo 48-page passport£154.50£177.51
Fill in a ‘Paying by credit card or debit card’ form for each passport you’re applying for and submit it with your application. Your credit or debit card will be charged in sterling.
You can use Mastercard, Visa, Electron, Diners Club and JCB.
How to apply

  1. Download the application form.
  2. Use the ‘Applying for a passport if you’re outside the UK’ guidance notes to help you fill in the application form.
  3. Include 2 identical new photos of you (or your child, if it’s a child passport application). Follow the rules about passport photos or your application may be delayed.
  4. Check which supporting documents you must submit with your application. You must get documents that aren’t in English - including documents showing an address - fully translated by a professional translator.

Supporting documents you must send with your application

Making your application

You must apply in person. You must bring photo ID with you.
Bring original supporting documents and a photocopy of each one. The original documents will be returned to you.
You must also bring your current passport with you when you apply, and a full colour photocopy of the entire passport (every page including blank pages). You can’t travel with it after you’ve applied for a new one - but you will be able to keep your existing passport for ID purposes.
You’ll need to book an appointment by email. Include your first name and last name and 3 alternative dates and times. You will receive an email confirming your appointment.

"You must also bring your current passport with you when you apply, and a full colour photocopy of the entire passport (every page including blank pages). You can't travel with it after you've applied for a new one - but you will be able to keep your existing passport for ID purposes."

Saw this part of the official statement above. That might put a crimp in travel plans for the 4 to 6 weeks of the process.

Just saw this gem as well - looks like you Brits have to make two trips to Bangkok to get a new passport.

www.gov.uk/overseas-passports

There's a 45GBP reduction on adult passports starting 7/4 - you will still have to pay the courier fee for post to/from UK. So, a 32 page adult should = 106.01GBP and a 48 page should = 132.51GBP... Big PITA having to make 2 trips to that shite visa app place in Bangkok - and mean probably more expensive for those not based in Bangkok.

There is a "Beta", online, UK passport renewal. Looking through it right now and I can't see anywhere, when using this method, that you need to be interviewed in Bangkok, Thailand, if applying from Thailand. I'll go through the steps to see if there's a surprise later along the application process.

Just went through the process & Thailand residents renewing a UK Passport do not qualify for the Beta service. You may be able to use this service from Thailand using a UK address?

Phil, if you get an appointment in bangkok, tell us how long you have o wait for it

The online beta passport service does not work if you say you live in thailand

"We are sorry but you cannot use the online passport application service from the country or territory you are applying from."

I mentioned that earlier, post #8.

Seeing as you're not a Thailand resident, can't you use UK in the pulldown option & get the passport sent there (use a relative's address), then mailed you?

The UK Visa Application center in Bangkok, where they will process your application for a new UK passport is at:

The Trendy Office Building
28th floor
Sukhumvit, Soi 13
Bangkok
Thailand

When you have applied for an appointment online, they will then email you a confirmed appointment. The system does all work very well once you have all your ducks in line.

YOU DO NEED TO BE ABLE TO PAY BY CREDIT CARD, THE CREDIT CARD DOES NOT HAVE TO BE IN YOUR NAME

Again - they only accept credit card payments.

They will call you by phone when the new passport arrives. They will NOT courier it to you, someone can pick it up for you from the Visa Application center, needed to do this is:

- Letter of authority from you to do this with your signature - THIS CAN BE A COPY LETTER

- Copy of the application processing form with processing number

- Copy of your existing passport

- Copy of the person who is picking up your passports' ID
