For me, way too easy to forget you have this in place. Too easy to forget to put the "key lock cover reminder" in place .

I use an ordinary but substantial commercial padlock through the rear disc on my D-Tracker. My FZ150i Yamaha has mating holes in the main-stand/bracket that also takes a padlock. Simple and reasonably effective.

They are good but like Phil said easy to forget, plus they wont stop a couple of guy's boosting it into the back of a Tranny van (english for Ford Transit Ron) :jump

Due to such high theft in cambo many people have motion alarms on even scooters.. I asked and they were less than 30 bucks fitted.. I am sure low quality and I dont think any kind of immobilizer, just a motion alarm with remote keyfob, but still another level of deterrent on the cheap.

Nothing will stop a determined thief (or number of thieves) - even locked in a compound is no guarantee. Chain it to a bridge and they will find a way to cut the chain. The padlock is just another deterrent but simple, cheap and easy to carry. If you forget to remove the padlock: you have probably forgotten your Licence, Name, Wife's name - and probably where you parked the bike in the first place. Having said that, I forgot the stand lock on the Yamaha (once). I was soon reminded when I tried to take the bike off the stand! Cheers

By "cambo" I take it you mean Cambodia?

Standard thing in Asia is to see when you are not paying attention, or park a vehicle between you and your bike (like when eating noodles etc) and then 4 guys with 2 bamboo poles lift your bike away, one pole thru the front wheel and one thru the back wheel. Simple and quick. Walk it away to a pick up truck and away with it.

Also works getting bikes thru a deep river , 2 guys and a pole thru the front wheel , 2 pushing from the back. Just lift the front enough to keep the engine out of the water.

Have you ever seen how thick a chain you need so a big set of bolt cutters won't go thru it ? When you buy your chain and they use a set of bolt cutters to cut your required length should give you a hint.

^ Cheers Bob, but I've got a normal disk lock. Actually, it was an alarm one - but the alarm packed in - that's why I'm after a replacement. I reckon the alarm is a good deterrent against anyone just lifting the bike up and carting it off... It also stops you trying to ride away with it still on.

many years ago in Uk I chained a harley chop i had built to a lampost and forgot when i came out the pub 4 hours later , dragged the lamp post 50m down the road , it was the funny noise from the back of the bike over the cacophony of the drag pipes that made me realise something was not quite right .10 m of bent pole and some concrete hanging off the rear mudguard and subframe was the clue ????,,, some chrome and paint missing but no real damage to the bike ,,,,, my mates had a good laugh .

Crs, kawasaki in Chiang Mai sell them. I have one and it is very useful.

BUT as many will testify, always put it on the back wheel !!

If you put it on the front & forget its there, when you initially move the bike it will possibly cause you to lose its balance and increase the likelyhood of a drop (and of course an ear ache from the alarm!).

Are you sure Harry? Always thought this was a bit of an urban myth...... can you imagine 4 Thai boneheads getting their shit together enough to find 2 decent bamboo poles and work out which 2 will take front, which the rear, and coordinate getting it into the pick-up (while out of their heads on Yaa Baa!)?
Certainly 2 guys using a bit of "on the spur of the moment" brawn, especially with these lightweight Finos and Scoopy scooters..... had it happen outside the Ace Cafe once, only 10 mins after my waitress parked it in a blind spot.

I rate these units...... don't buy the cheapest, spend another few hundred baht for a good one..... my missus has had one of these Matrix Magnum units on her Mio for 3 years, still works as good as the day it was fitted.





But..... anything's a deterrent...... chain and padlock, disc lock, anything that's gonna slow a tealeaf down. My mate one year re-sprayed his Kawasaki Kaze (bloody good and sought after bikes, a few years ago) with Suzuki Step livery as guys kept nicking bits off his prized Kwak!
