All OK at the Nan border crossing and great to be processed at a quiet crossing, bored officers waiting to do the paperwork. Checked both the Laos and Thai sides who advise no problem with motorbikes crossing. The Laos office open from 8am to 8pm.

Just for the record, was that with out without this letter that the Laos side has started asking for ?

Also has any ever tried the the visa ruining of vehicles there without actually doing the Laos side ??

Hmh, nice, thank you for this information. I´ve been the last time in Laos in january 1996 and I promised myself never never again. But maybe...... Next february we´ll be in that area and BIG MAYBE I will try it again. From Chiang-Khong to Luang Prabang and back to Thailand via Nan. Has any experianced guy fun to join us on that short trip?

Harry i am sure Laos conditions have changed greatly since 1996 and today it is very enjoyable. If you enter from Chiang Khong, the road all the way to Oudum Xai is pretty much a highway. Oudum to Pakmong on the 13N is a mountain road and terrible but there are plans to fix it soon. Down to Luang Prabang and Vientienne is all good now. This time i took the Oudum to Pakbeng 2W and was a good ride, mostly sealed and some under repair, the scenery is spectacular. I had never been on the river boat before so i parked up at Pak Beng and caught the boat to Luang Prabang and back.

ITP latest at Nan/Nam Hguen crossing.

Guys,
I can confirm when I entered Laos with the bike at Nan (Nam Ngeun on the Laos Side), 2 weeks ago, I was not asked for, nor did I offer the ITP letter, to either Thai or Laos Customs.
Yes, customs officials helpful both sides, although Laos did charge the 60 bht overtime fee, at about 4.30 in the afternoon !
Currently the Thai Immigration is still processed in the little "hut" on the road - see photo - but you do need to walk back up the hill to the big office for customs processing.
