NAGA FIRE BALLS

For what it is worth but the 2013 Naga Fireballs are expected to rise again from the Mekong river this year on October 19 (Wan Awk Pansa which signals the end of Buddhist rains retreat and falls on the full moon of the eleventh Thai lunar month). There is also a Naga Festival in Nongkhai from October 10-16, along the Mekong River bank.

There are also corresponding celebrations on the Lao side of the river and no shortage of theories on whether Thailand’s neighbors, on the opposite bank, may know more than they are admitting on what causes the spectacle. The Mutmee Guesthouse in Nongkhai is organizing a four hour boat trip on the Mekong (see below) which seems to be well worth as you might be able to escape the crowds of people on the river banks all waiting to "see it happen". So, what is it all about:

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Naga fireballs (Thai: บั้งไฟพญานาค; RTGS: bang fai phaya nak), also known to as Mekong lights, and “bung fai paya nak” by the locals, is an unconfirmed phenomenon often seen in Thailand’s Mekong river, which is also seen in (Nong Khai province in Isan) and in Laos (Vientiane Province)—in which glowing balls are said to naturally rise from the water high into the air.[1]

The balls are reddish and have diverse size from smaller sparkles up to the size of basketballs;[2] they quickly rise up to a couple of hundred metres before disappearing. The number of fireballs reported varies between tens and thousands per night.[3] Objective observers who have witnessed this phenomenon report tracer bullets as probable cause.
