Latest reports are you cannot cross to Savannakhet with a motorcycle at this border point, however there is a pickup at the border point that for a fee of 1,500 will carry your motorcycle across. Not sure if this scam also applies to leaving Laos but if it's anything like Houay Xai ( two weeks ago i was escorted out of Laos for free) there should be no issues leaving.

This may well be just another knee jerk action but best to cross at Pakse for the moment.

No change at Savannaket/Mukdahan bridge, always has been no motorcycles across the bridge out to Laos except as "freight" on a pick up truck. Coming from Laos to Thailand on a Thai registered motorcycle has never been a problem. Normal incoming customs etc for the motorcycle.

Well, someone on the other forum was a bit less lucky a few days ago when he was planning to cross from Chiangkhong to Huayxay around 5.30 in the afternoon. The driver of the escort vehicle on the Thai side urged him to speed up the paperwork as he (the driver) was going home at 6 o'clock. The rider finished all the paperwork after six and found that he was not allowed to cross as there was no driver for the escort vehicle so he was forced to stay another night in Chiangkhong.

It would appear many of the crossing points are getting twitchy again. I did notice on the Houay Xai immigration they now charge 1 dollar extra if you arrive after 4pm weekdays.

Yes, that happens also at other border crossings - Overtime as the Lao government working hours are from 8 till 4 in the afternoon
