Lek - a motocross rider in Chiang Mai, Thailand is a mechanic some people use to do work on their dirt bikes.

He's hard to find, so i've used a mapsource screen shot to show his location from the Nawerat bridge in Chiang Mai.

He speaks basic English and is very reliable.

Below is his old location

Probably the most respected mechanic in north Thailand, Joe Sauerborn's workshop is always full of bikes & you normally have to wait to be seen to. Highly recommended that you call and make an appointment.

A little hard to find, tucked down a narrow street between 2 one way systems.

Leah - Luang Prabang, Laos

Leah has been a mechanic in Luang Prabang, Laos for years, he has helped numerous motorcycle travelers out of mechanical trouble. His daughter speaks good English, he also has about 10X Honda XR 250's for rent. If you're bike's waiting for parts maybe you can rent one of his bikes so that the tour isn't halted.

Phnom Penh, Cambodia - Vay's Motorcycle shop

Vay's motorcycle shop in Phnom Penh is supposed to be excellent. Robert Hiekel had his piston rings replaced on his Africa twin here with no problems at all.

Notes from Robert "His shop is located on Russian Blvd in PP, maybe a half kilometer from the river. He just did a PERFECT complete paint job on my friend Peter's Africa Twin for $ 150 dollars. Thai shops slapdash work, and shove it out the door. His shop actually works very carefully, with no mistakes found later".

Dara Motorcycle - Phnom Penh, Cambodia

Fred just gave us another mechanic recommendation in Phnom Penh, Cambodia:

I would definitely recommend Dara. He's a Cambodian guy who is an extremely experienced 2 and 4 stroke dirt bike mechanic. The majority of expats in Phnom Penh go to him. His details are:

Contact:
Dara Motorcycle
#43, Street 136 Phnom Penh
012335499
darabikeshop {AATT} yahoo {DoT} com

You can use the GPS-coordinates from the closed adventure moto shop:

GPS: N 11 34.276 - E 104 55.739

More Cambodia recommended mechanics

Jim from Hotel California 2,Phnom Penh, a long time rider and resident in Cambodia has sent me the following mechanics he recommends:

"Flying bikes, the bike shop, two wheels tony, precision, angkor dirt bikes", will find out more about them.

Phonsavan, Laos

In Phonsavan, Laos, there's a mechanic opposite Crater's restaurant.

He does excellent vulcanizing on punctured inner tubes, Don't have any reports on his mechanical skills, but his workshop was quite well kitted out.

C&P Chiang Mai, Thailand

Lan who owns C&P bike rentals in Chiang Mai, Thailand, comes highly recommended as a mechanic in Chiang Mai, I'm told he's good at suspension work (he's installing my race tech valving in my rear shock).

A lot of the bike tour companies use C&P/ Lan as his bikes seemed to better better maintained and more reliable than other rental shops.

Biker House - Qualified Harley Davidson Mechanic

Looks like north Thailand has hit the jackpot recently with a couple of excellent Harley Davidson mechanics setting up businesses in the region. The latest being A.J, a qualified Harley Davidson mechanic, trained in the USA.

We stopped by to see A.J who has just set up a Harley Davidson servicing business on R 118 just south of the Doi Saket area, location:

Sa Moto, Chiang Mai, Thailand

Lots of satisfied customers leave here and will recommend him. He's particularly good at tuning and remapping, can do Ducati, KTM etc.... usually charges around 4,000 bht for the remapping.

Hi KTMphil, I just wanted to let you know I used Google to find the location of Sa Moto this morning (Friday 26 April 2013) and went there straight away. Google Maps shows the location as just before the 3 Elephants Corner on Mahidol Road heading towards the Moat from the Airport Flyover. Sorry to advise but apart from Thai Post, a clothes shop and the AIA building, there is nothing there on the left. No bike shop. On the road heading towards the flyover from the Moat, likewise. There used to be a Big Bike Shop further down the road but that sells pedal cycles now - but I did see what I think is a new shop opening just down from where that Bike Shop used to be, but I didnt see the name Sa Moto. Sorry guys. Cheers - Roo, Chiang Mai

There is a very handy Google map showing a Motorcycle Directory like big bike repair shops and other bike related shops are in Thailand. This Directory was was set up by Sefton - Livin-LOS (member of RideAsia) and some of you may find this handy. You can add places to it with descriptions, etc. which would help to keep the Directory up to date for the benefit of all:

Yes, checked this morning and they are still there. When you come from the airport drive in the direction of the moat and you will see the shop on your left just before the second pedestrian bridge over the road and right after a side road to the left (and before the post office and the AIA office).

G'day Lone Rider, like wow!. I wish I had found this map a few months ago. Many thanks from this end of Chiang Mai. I genuinely appreciate your time to point me to this map. I am loath to add the Santitham place I know - they kept my bike for pretty much 6 months and still didn't get it right, but what they did, I am very sure they did the best they could. Shame as they are nice people and always showed me what was wrong before I said go ahead. Cheers: Roo, Chiang Mai

Got it (Samoto) at last. I didn't look at places before Thai Post because when I entered the Longitude and Latitude into Google map, this clearly showed the location where AIA is. Again, many thanks everyone. Cheers, Roo - Chiang Mai

Honda XR 250 source in Chiang Rai

This Thai gentleman had probably 30 Honda XR 250's in his workshop. He said he wasn't in the rental business, but had a few for sale, a new-ish looking one, invoice only was 80,000 bht (not the older model in the front). He would be an excellent source for parts.

A new Harley Davison / custom bike / chopper full service business in Chiang Mai. Service, parts, custom bike fabrication, motorcycle sales, it's all there. The place has a great vibe.

A full service workshop, Jim, who has a Harley V-Rod to assemble has checked out all the possibilities for this and has decided to use Monster Top Garage for the job. Labor rate here is only 200 Bht an hour, incredibly reasonable.

Location is a little tricky, best route is to take R 1001 / Mae Jo road north from R 11/ Superhighway, first traffic light (McDonalds on your front left), turn right, go 1km and take (left) last small soi 50 meters before the Nissan dealer. He is 300 meters up on the RHS.

Superbike tyres & oil in Chonburi - "Moto Shop"

Stumbled across this young chap in Chonburi who has a tyre changing & wheel balancing machine, aswell as stock of european synthetic oils, filters. and some Pirelli tyres. He can get stuff to order and had no problem in getting a set of Metzler Tourance tyres for my V-strom.
Although located opposite Power Buy on Hwy 3, he's difficult to find without GPS co-ordinates due to the fact the "shop" is located in the middle of a large metal fabrication workshop. Not ideal for passing trade, but this could be of use if more specialist work was required.
I'm calling him "Moto Shop tyres and Oil" and the co-ordinates are : N13.34494 E100.97780
Some pics with his name & phone number are attached.
