The Lao government has declared its intention to launch ten new hydropower dams nationwide amid ASEAN member countries' desire to import many thousands of megawatts of energy from Laos.The development of energy is designed to respond the demand of light and heavy industries, services and the ongoing growth of accommodations.This was asserted during speeches by the Deputy Minister of Energy and Mines, Mr Khammany Inthirath during his working visits to Huaphan, Xieng Khuang, Xaysomboun and Vientiane Provinces early this month.Presently, Laos operates 29 hydropower dams with generation capacity of over 3,000 megawatts that are generating electricity for both domestic consumption and for export."This year, we will launch ten more hydropower dams with an additional capacity generation of more than 2,000 megawatts. This will bring Laos' generating capacity to 5,000 megawatts within the year,"Bringing additional dams online is the best thing that can be done for national development and to reduce poverty of people living in rural areas. By providing the areas with permanent electricity, residents will have increased employment an educational opportunities due to the spur of industrial production for market sale, SMEs, education information, ICT and others.In addition, local people will enjoy greater conveniences from roads and water systems thanks to the dam development projects."Looking back at the period of 2006-2010, we had only a few dams and capacity generation of only about 1,000 megawatts. Now we can generate 3,000 megawatts and will soon be able to generate an additional 2,000 megawatts per year," Khammany Inthirath said.These projects reflect the Party and Government's focus on eliminating poverty by 2020. They are part of the work being done to sustainably develop and attract overseas investment for construction, industry, factories, hotels and services.This year, electricity providing radio for Lao people nationwide will reach 148 districts and is expected to reach 80 percent to 90 percent of the population by 2020.
