To ride From Chiang Mai, Thailand, into Laos, then off-road southbound in Laos, south to Pakse, with some off-road poking around, will take you at least 10 days and probably more than 2 weeks if you want to make the most of it. You'll Probably be on a 250cc enduro bike and its over 1,000km from Pakse, Laos back to Chiang Mai on boring straight highways, not a fun proposition at all.

From Pakse, south Laos, west across the Chong Mek international border crossing back into Thailand & 90km west to Ubon Ratchatani & its still basically 1,000 km NW to Chiang Mai on boring, straight highways, on a 250cc hard seat.

So, its 1,500 Bht in fuel to get back, plus tire wear and oil. Also on a 250, probably 3 days of riding, 2 nights of 500 Bht hotels too.The option of shipping the bike back via the post office and flying back is looking quick appealing.
