Checkpoint in Java,Indonesia

@merantau...yes it is....i have change the rear shock and rebuit fron forks,so it got more grip and good feedback.engine was rebuilt on belt, roller and carb.it was fast...but if you find it later slow.its because Daryl eat lots of local street food he loved..so the bike got more load from the rider, not the road..l.o.l

Daryl really enjoyed his time with you and loved the local food for sure.

Checkpoint in Java, Indonesia.
Rocketz.
Roby, I can't thank you enough for your hospitality that you gave me during my stay in Solo. Thank you for servicing my bike and improving the suspension with your skill and experience. Also, I must thank you and your beautiful family for being so friendly, helpful, patient and treating me as one of your family members. Very much appreciated.

If anyone is in need of servicing, repairs, upgrading their bike and you're on the island of Java, Indonesia - this is the place to go. Plenty of hotels, home stays, guesthouses and restaurants so its a perfect place for a little rest.

Brother, Roby we will ride together somewhere, sometime in the future!
Cheers from Daryl Rolinson

Hello Robby / Rocketz,

i read many good comments about you here.

Appreciate if you can offer some advice to a brother Asian rider.

I am Singaporean and my wife is Javanese living in Singapore.

We plan on doing a “Great Java and Bali ride” hopefully in 2019.

The plan is to fly into either Jakarta, Surabaya or maybe even Solo, either buy or rent bikes and ride Java, ending our trip in Bali. The difference is that my wife’s cousin owns a large lorry and promises to escort us through the trip.

We are setting aside 3 weeks for our ride and some rest time in Bali.

We intend to fly back to Singapore from Bali.

Bikes:2 options

We could either buy bikes from the city we arrive in and after ending our trip in Bali, sell the bikes there. If we have problems selling because of time, wife’s cousin can load bikes on his lorry and sell off slowly at better price.

If rentals are available, we could put bikes on lorry after ending trip in Bali and cousin can return bikes to city where we rented bikes.

We wish to visit Surabaya, Bandung, Jakarta, Borobudur, Yogyakarta, Mt Bromo, Solo, Tregggalek: wife’s hometown in East Java, Bali and if we have enough time, maybe take a ferry across to Sumatra and spend a night or 2 before returning to Java.

There are at least 3 of us interested in this trip. 2 bikes riding solo and me with wife on back / pillion.

My question to you is:

1. Which time of the year is best for riding in your opinion? I hate rains and don’t mind hot dry weather. Of course we prefer the cool season.

2. Is 3 weeks enough? If necessary, we can drop the Sumatra trip and just do Java and Bali. We wish to spend 1 to 2 nights at each interesting city.

3. We will try to borrow bikes from relatives but will consider rentals if price is reasonable.
If we buy and use for 3 weeks, do you think it’s a better idea. Wife is a IDN citizen and can register bikes under her name. Your comments please.

4. What would be a suggested bike? For the solo riders and for me as we have 2 of us on the bike?

Thank you in advance and will drop by your shop in Solo when we pass through.

Richard from Singapore

Hi Richard,
Sorry for my late response.Nice to meet you,SG is my second home.i knew many moto guys there.even i race in tuas circuit (now no more) couple time.
Regarding to your question:

-Indo weather is quite same to SG.these day, sometime rain sometime no,not so often.so quite hard to decide because peak rain season here not in december anymore.but who know? i personally will start on early jan if it has to be 2019.

-3 weeks is good and enough from start to finish (on the bike),if you want to ride in sumatra.this will quite dilemma.if you buy or rent there,it will take lots of cost to retur/resell there.unless you didnt want to resell over there.some parts of sumatra are good scenery and some good road.but not all.

-You can rent bike here, but mostly scooter, cup bike or a few small cc naked bike.if i were you,i would rather buy.here selling on origin license plate city would be more acceptable rather than other city, but it can be also done.for sure it will reduce selling price than local bike.i would buy used one not new one.but you can also buy the new one.
Consider for some panniers you should put on.but if youre an easy going traveller, you dont need to carry many things, backpacks would be ok.you can buy cheap clothes everywhere and do bathroom/hotel wash.

-For bike, depend on budget.but if i ride with pillion.the cheapest and most comfort is yamaha scorpio 225cc.price would be arround SGD 1500-2000.but the problem is this bike isnt popular so hard to resell.maybe yamaha vixion 150 would be just great,or honda cb150.both easy to resell but only got 150cc on it.

Anyway, trenggalek is quite nearby to solo.about 2-3hrs by bike.there a very nice route from solo there.i called it the tail of the dragon route.twisty, less traffic, good road, nice food, trust me thats the best.

Any further question,you could whatsapp me on +62 85 22 900 60 60

Robby / Rockets,

Thank you so much for your kind reply.

Terimakasih banyak atas sarannya

will seriously consider Jan 2019 to do trip.

You mentioned buying and selling back in same city. Will there be a problem buying a bike registered in one city and selling in another city?

Also what about insurance?
As my wife is a Indonesian citizen and holds both car and motorbike license, can all 3 bike be registered and insured in her name? Solves a lot of problems.

Anyway look forward to “Belanja Malang” next time you’re in Singapore.

Thanks again.

Richard,

No,there would be no problem to sell on another area, but normally the buying price would be lower.mostly they prefer the same plate on their area.but if resell price arent you most concern, that would be ok.

For bike insurance here,i think you better not take.take time to apply and beside motorcycle insurance hard to claim,as the insurance company dont have nationwide branches.
It would be different for rider insurance.but it only on well known hospital on cities.
Yes,she can to get those 3.i come 1-2 times to SG in a month,so my singlish quite good haha
