3 Brits & 2 Septics ride for Laos PART 5
at the eastern end of R4B, you end up at the mekong directly opposite Luang Prabang. The ferry crossing is 150 bht & takes about 15 minutes.
Some Laos fishing boats on the Mekong
Off the ferry, into Luang Prabang and lunch at Joma
Tuna melt at Joma
After lunch, tried our usual GH, Philalak -Full! Chinese new year!
Then on Auke's recommendation tried the Rama hotel
...was a little expensive for us, Auke is obviously more of a hitter than we knew, so we moved on to the Sabaidee GH
Clean rooms 650 bht
The waterfront restaurants were packed with Chinese being Chinese new year
Our bikes parked at the waterfront in Luang Prabang
We were fortunate enough to arrange dinner (at L'Elephant) with Don Duvall in Luang Prabang, who is the God of off-road riding in south east Asia. Incredibly interesting man, you could listen to him for hours.
Don's well-used XR400, he has 2 of them!
A bit of line dancing at the Moon swan, in Luang Prabang then off to bed. Luang Prabang shuts early, 12.30am and everything is shut
A quick goodbye to some Chinese friends from Kunming that were staying at our Gh then off south on R13 towards Vientiane, 410km's south.
Up above the clouds on R13 south
R13 south, lovely road in Laos
Rob noticed he was losing lots of coolant and we couldn't figure out where it was going. Again attracted lots of attention when looking for the leak this time
Laos guy eating lunch out of the sun under his trailer
After some probing, Robs leak turned out to be a pin hole in the radiator
The first attempt to repair with a stone, some rubber and wire ties was unsuccessful
So we then did the repair the correct way with some epoxy and it worked great
We bumped into a Belgian guy on a 1200GS while doing a repair who had lunch with us while we were waiting for the repair to harden
The repair delayed us and we ended up rolling into Vientiane in the dark, checked in a the Metropole hotel 850 bht , huge rooms in a good location
Had dinner in the Spirit House on the Mekong
Here our bikes on the north bank of the Mekong river, the lights in the background are on the Thai side of the river
Digby, who runs a motorbike tour business in Vietnam joined us for dinner, great to talk with him
Then the next morning, after clearing back into Thailand at Nong Khai, the lovely 819km ride back to Chiang mai.
