3 Brits & 2 Septics ride for Laos PART 3

From the Thai Huai Kon/ Laos muen Nguen border, the ride eastwards towards Hongsa in Laos is about 40km of fast, hard packed dirt in dry season, perfect for big adventure, dual sport bikes

The rutted surface here gave Rob's suspension some grief, Ktm was unaffected

The combination of 100's of Chinese & Thai construction workers & Chinese new year made finding a room to sleep in Hongsa difficult. But we found a new place on the road north next to the market, Souphaphone GH, 350bht, excellent value.

At the same GH we bumped into 2 French guys on rented XR250's that had been rented from Vientiane and had ridden to Luang Prabang then over the Mountain toHongsa.

There are now 2 banks with ATM machines in Hongsa that have been installed only in the last 3 months, they are both 50 meters north of the main market.

We ate in Hongsa at the Mai Ngam restaurant , very good laos food, clean place

fantastic photos Phil and some great info.
Does the road from Munag Nguan to Hongsa have this road base service all the way?
Looks like the road will see tar seal before the wet.

Not sure if they will put a final asphalt layer on it at this time as this road will see HEAVY traffic in the next years due to the construction of the 1400 MW lignite fired power plant a bit northwest of Hongsa. I assume that all the components for the power plant as well as construction equipments will be brought in by road from Thailand over this road and this no doubt will damage the road.

Yep --it's the same hard packed sand/ mud all the way, fantastic riding
