Mudslides block Xieng Khuang roads

Sections of roads in Xieng Khuang province in the north of the country have been badly affected by mudslides following heavy rain over the last three weeks. However, all major roads are now open to traffic thanks to the prompt action of road workers who cleared the mud quickly. But many roads remain slippery and difficult to navigate owing to the remaining mud.

Some sections of the road linking Xieng Khuang province to Longchaeng district in Xaysomboun province are still in poor condition as the authorities have been carrying out improvements on this route.

An official from the provincial Public Works and Transport Department, Mr Thongkith Phanthavong, told Vientiane Times on Friday that several roads were badly impacted, especially in Morkmay district, from the past three weeks of rainfall. “Morkmay district's roads suffered from landslides and flooding in the wake of torrential rain but now the roads are open to traffic again,” he said.

Mudslides have also blocked roads in other provinces.

In Luang Namtha roads and bridges were damaged or destroyed by flooding and mudslides. Meanwhile, low-lying sections and bridges of the country's main arterial route Road No. 13 South have also been affected by flooding, with areas inundated from Borikhamxay to Champassak province. The provinces worst hit by flooding are Borikhamxay, Khammuan, Vientiane, Luang Prabang, Luang Namtha, Bokeo and Xaysomboun.
