Mission to clear UXO in Borikhamxay launched

A joint mission by the Lao and Russian militaries to remove unexploded ordnance (UXO) in Khamkeuth district of Borikhamxay province began on Friday.
This was announced by the official in-charge of the Ministry of National Defense’s Humanitarian UXO Demining Unit of Army 58 (U58). Lieutenant Colonel Phonkeo Orladom told Vientiane Times on Friday that the mine clearance unit of the International Mine Action Center of the Russian Armed Forces left Chkalovsky military airfield on October 10 and arrived in Laos the next day to assist in demining in Borikhamxay.
“To achieve the goal, we will deploy 35 military personnel to work with 36 Russian military engineers,” Lieutenant Colonel Phonkeo said. The Russian engineers will spend five months doing humanitarian mine clearance in an area of 100 hectares at Lak Xao settlement, 350 km east of Vientiane.
