Round 1 of racing at Bira track, Pattaya, Sunday 27th May, 2012


Round 1 of the Motorcycle Mag Road Racing Championship will be held at the Bira Race Track Pattaya on Sunday, 27th May, 2012.


This will be the first race for Colin Butler and Luke Stokes as part of the Panadda Racing team, both will be riding race prepared Honda Fireblade CBR 1000 RR's.

My plan is to go down on Thursday too so I can catch some of the testing on Friday and Saturday. After a five month break everyone is raring to go. Colin and Luke will definitely be in the mix, but there are others in the superbike class to watch out for:

Saksit Senakhan has got a new (ish) ZX10-R. He needs to resolve some set-up issues, but he was doing 1:06s at Bira with the bike wobbling about all over the place. He is certainly capable of running 1:04s with the right set-up.


'Stamp' Apiwat Wongthananon is fresh from his double podium in the ARRC Asia Dream Cup at Sepang last week and could well be maturing psychologically to give him the toughness to sustain a strong pace for race distance.

Another Panadda Racing rider, Ben Fortt will start the season in SB-2, but his testing times have been coming down into the 1:06s. This cool-headed 18 year-old usually runs faster in races than in practice, so I expect his race pace to lift him quickly into SB-1.


One major disappointment is the story that 'Sup' Anucha will not be in SB-1 in 2012. I had previously tipped him for the championship, but it seems we are to be denied watching him transfer his sublime light motorcycle racing skills to Superbikes.

I have not been to many of the pre-season tests, but Luke and Colin have other riders they rate and may well comment.

One thing I have learned over the last year or so is that we won't really know who will be on the grid until the competitors turn up for registration!

It will also be the first round at Bira for Moto3 Production, which has already run three rounds at Thailand Circuit. Last year this class provided the most thrilling racing of all, so it will be good to see how the 2012 field is shaping up. I found some results for yesterday's round on the Facebook of a FMSCT employee, which showed a win for Stamp by less than 0.2s, so it looks like the excitement will continue.

I think "the Bell" will also be running very good but it just depends if he can last race distance, he was running mid 04s at BIRA a few weeks ago.

There seems to be a number of guys running low 06s to high 05s so there could be some good racing there. I still think moto3 will be the race to watch, I was at Thailand circuit yesterday and the racing is even tighter then last year with 7 riders running 1:29s laps and 5 more in the 1:30s.

Myself and Luke will be at BIRA from thurs until Sun, still have a lot of setup work to be done on the new bike but the good ole repsol will be sitting in the Van if neede. .lol

Luke has been having some fuel delivery problems with his bike, thinks its from rust falling off the inside of the tank where some welding was done......pretty dangerous out there if you have a problem with bikes coming up behind you at 240 km/h

Bell (55), Ben's (40) team-mate is going quick, he ended up third passing Luke (who came in a respectable 4th in the SB1 class) 2/3rds of the way through the race, also riding a Honda Fireblade 1000 RR. Colin ended up 2nd, Stamp coming first.
