Seems like a very sensible time [ provided they are open ] to take a ride out of town, to some of the National Parks that he was so instrumental in developing and promoting! A king with vision. R.I.P, one of the good ones.

Mourning period - Advice to foreigners

& cancelled event schedule

As Thailand is currently in a period of national mourning after the passing of the beloved monarch His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, many thousands of mourners have gathered around the Grand Palace in Bangkok to be present for the royal religious rites and ceremonies taking place and to pay their respects to the father of the nation. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) would like to ask that members of the public stay updated via media announcements and notices from the Bureau of the Royal Household as well as the Royal Thai Government to ensure accurate information. We also request that the solemnity of these rites are observed and the visitors - local and international - wear respectful attire. In the period of national mourning, some festivals and activities in the kingdom have been cancelled or postponed. Other events will go ahead as planned but may be toned down as a mark of respect. Please see the list of events that are postponed or cancelled in the following page. The TAT would like to recommend that any visitors with travel or tourism plans reconfirm with agents and check local media regularly as well as follow the advice of the local authorities for announcements and updates. They should also be aware that in some areas transportation could be affected. May he rest in peace. The Australian flag is at half mast today as a sign of respect for the late King

An update for Chiangmai:

CityNews - Here is a list of what we know is going on, and not going on in Chiang Mai over the coming months following the death of His Majesty the King, Bhumibol Adulyadej.

Markets
The Saturday and Sunday Night Markets are now operating as usual. (following reports they were to be closed which were repealed)

The Night Bazaar is open as usual.

NAP Market scheduled for December 5-11 has now been rescheduled to sometime in January 2017.

The Citylife Garden Fair on November 19 is still on.

Restaurants and Cafes
Almost all restaurants and cafes are open as usual, however some who usually have live music will not for the next month.

Nightlife
Alcohol has not been banned but some restaurants and bars maybe closed or not selling alcohol out of respect for the King.
Most venues will be not playing music, and most scheduled DJ sets or live bands have been cancelled until at least November 14.

Zoe in Yellow and other tourist areas are open as usual, but will be heavily toned down for the next month or so.

Warm Up Cafe and other clubs around the city are open as usual, but have no live bands or DJs performing. Some maybe closed and it is best to check ahead.

The Citylife Wine Crawl and almost all night time events over the next month have been cancelled. Please check the individual events status before you go.

Festivals
The Loy Kratong (Yi-Peng) festival has not been cancelled after the Governor repeals his first announcement. However, the event will have no entertainment planned. People are invited to join the tradition in a peaceful and quiet manner. Fireworks have been banned. We are still unsure if the Maejo Lantern Festival will continue as planned or not.
Most Halloween festivals have been cancelled.

King of Thailand's Funeral Ceremony: Advice for Tourists

Thailand is building up to what will be a historic period with final preparations under way for the funeral of the late King. The Royal Cremation Ceremony will be held in Bangkok from October 25-29. It will be a sad time for Thai people, but the country will remain as welcoming as ever for tourists and you will still be able to enjoy your trip. Although there is no need to change travel plans, please be respectful and if you are visiting Bangkok or other areas of Thailand in October, there are some important points to be aware of.
