Nearly sixty restaurants and entertainment shops along the Mekong River in Pakse district, Champassack Province will shut down at the end of this month due to an upcoming development project by the government. In the past, the entrepreneurs had rented the land from the government to operate their businesses but a committee for the Pakse Development Project said that the shop owners would not receive any compensation because the plot of land belongs to the government.

Some restaurants have already closed, however all shops must discontinue operations by 28 February of this year.

Shame, I've always enjoyed sitting at the small food stalls on the river watching the sunset whenever I'm in Pakse.

Lao government developments always sound ominous to me... :hmm
