Overall registrations in 2012 rose 6% year-on-year to 2.13 million units, setting a new record for the local industry, according to the Land Transport Department.
New-motorcycle registrations totalled 152,894 units in December, up by 25% year-on-year.
Honda was the winner, having sold 109,816 units in December, up 55% year-on-year, said Suchart Arunsaengroj, the director of AP Honda Co Ltd.
Honda's sales growth outpaced the industry's average last year, allowing it to retain its 24-year lead in the local market.

He added Honda was also the first producer in Thailand to achieve the 20-million-unit sales mark based on its records from 1986-2012.

Of December's total sales, 75,717 or 50% were AT motorcycles. Family motorcycles achieved sales of 70,419 units (46%), followed by 2,994 units (2%) for on- and off-road types and 2,239 units (1%) for sport motorcycles.

By manufacturer, Honda posted the largest sales of 109,816 units in December, with a 72% market share, followed by Yamaha with sales of 31,404 units (21%).
Suzuki posted sales of 5,438 units or 4%, followed by 3,017 units from Kawasaki or 2% and 3,219 units from other brands.

Total motorcycles sales for the domestic market reached 2,130,067 units in 2012, of which 1,062,494 or 50% were AT motorcycles.
