OMG a Harley Davidson 250?

They better be careful.... the 250 will probably outperform some of the V twin range
 
HD has made some smaller than 500cc engines:

In the early 1930's HD made a 350cc Model B, with a single cylinder side valve engine, nicknamed the Peashooter.
I believe the body guards of Spanish Dictator Franco rode these, they are very rare, only a small number were made.

From 1960 to 1978 HD co-operated with an Italian company called Aermacchi.
Under the brand AMF-Harley Davidson they manufactured 2 and 4 stroke engines from 125cc to 350cc if I remember well.

AMF mismanaged the company to almost bankruptcy and sold the shares to a group of companies led by Vaughn Beals.
This Vaughn Beals saved the HD brand and made an IPO in 1987 possible.
