Old steamship on show at Wat Photaram in Buengkhan

A large number of holidaymakers have spent their free time visiting Bueng Kan to see an old steamship which sank in the Mekong River decades ago. The ship, believed to have been transporting wine from Nakhon Phanom to Vientiane in Laos, foundered in Bueng Kan Sub-district 69 years ago. The crew managed to survive the sinking but the western couple who owned the ship chose to stay on board. There were earlier unsuccessful attempts to recover the vessel in 1948 and 1950. Finally, the collaborative effort of villagers and officials lifted the sunken ship out of the water in April this year.

The ship is on display at Wat Potharam - Coordinates: N18.33880 E103.69214. The temple also houses Luang Phor Phra Yai Buddha image which is highly revered by both Thai and Lao people. -
