New Toyota Vigo

Im going to trade my Chevvy Collorado in for a new 4x4 Toyota Vigo. I cannot for the life of me make a decision between the Double Cab or the Smart Cab. I like the extra flatbed space the smart cab provides for bikes etc, on the other hand the double cab interior space is going to be a lot more comfortable. i know you can get 2 dirt bikes in the back of a double cab as i did recently with Phil's, however you have to have the tail gate down. Now not sure how longer the smart cab is, will it allow 2 dirt bikes to be loaded without the need to leave the tailgate down?
What would you guys choose and why?, interior space and comfort or rear flatbed space? Personally im slightly swaying towards the smart cab as I have an Accord for long journeys and comfort, however this would be without a bike. The price difference is quite substantial too, approx. 160,000 Baht. Not sure but I think the smart cab's are manual gearboxes which doesn't suite the wife if it is, I dont mind the manuals, less to go wrong.

I`ve got a Colorado 2 door Spacecab John.

To get 2 bikes in i have to leave the tail gate down.
With only one i have to put the bike a little sideways to shut it.
Never had 2 in it anyway but i`m happy i can close it with the bike and other bits and pieces in the back.

The space cab still doesnt let them go in 2 bikes straight IIRC.. One bike corner to corner.

I would take the double cab and look to have a light bike frame fabbed.. Something that 2 bikes can be strapped into, and then slide up and in.. Or a front wheel clip mount to hold them in neatly.

The spacecab rear seat is kinda hard and not so pleasant.. Sure maybe ok to bung a couple of Thai birds in but it loses that 4 adults comfort imo. I would also go and have a long hard look at the nissan navara, I reckon its a better truck and because Thais shy away from the main brands its much better value. That 6 speed manual eco tec engine is a gem and its got loads of awards and parise from the western motoring press.

You have to keep the rear trunk down with the bikes in, but isn't a big deal - put a net around the back to keep the police happy. Remember, you have lots of gear with you (especially 2 riders) that needs to be locked inside the car, surprising how much space that takes up, lots more interior space with a double cab and you can still get 3 MX bikes in the back.

Why get a new Vigo though? It's an old model now, that they will be replacing in the next year or two. The new Ford and Mazda are better trucks in my opinion.

This years Vigo has just had a minor face lift. It is the same truck underneath.

The new Ford is the way to go but the top models have been delayed due to the floods. I am waiting for the Ford 3.2 4x4 Double Cab. The top spec model has 200hp, hill assent and descent control, traction control, a very smooth 6 speed auto box and 6 airbags. There are lots of other new bit and pieces but those are what sold it to me

This is 70K Baht more expensive than the top of the range Vigo, however very impressive specs and definitely worth a look, a NOB rescue vehicle candidate for sure.
How long is the 3.2 Wildtrac delayed for and where is the Ford dealer in Chiang Mai?

Not sure where the Ford dealer in CM is, check out the Ford website. The 3.2 Wildtrack is supposed to be available around June. The 2.2 models are already in the dealers now, apart from the 2.2 Wildtrack.

The new colorado has been given a appealing visual facelift.. But like you I borrowed a mates old style colorado and hated it.. Like you say lots of revving and noise without much go, I put that down to a auto box that seemed pretty basic.. Never driven a manual to know tho.

Of the trucks I like the Mitsu, the toyo and the nissan.. The toyo has only had a very minor facelift tho, bit disappointing to not make more of the change.

I had a Isuzu D Max (same as Colorado) 3L 4 door 5sp manual that was really slow on the open road but had really good grunt off idle 4x4 spec i would call it.

Sold it and got a Chev Colorado (same as Isuzu) 2.5L Common Rail Turbo 2dr 5sp manual that goes much better than the 3L on the open road but not the same down low grunt.It will wheel spin in 2nd and 3rd if you tramp on the throttle hard.

Best to test drive them in my opinion because if i knew the 3L i bought first was going to be such a slug compared to the 2.5L i wouldn`t have got it.

Johnny I reckon if you will spend most of your time carrying one bike in the back of the pick up then the smart cab is all you need, however if you will be taking 2 bikes most of the time then it doesnt matter whether you get the smart cab or 4 door as either way the trailer will have to be down.. Ive kinda came to the conclusion that if two bikes are involved it doesn't really matter double cab or smart cab the tailgate will be down, good observation Luke. With that in mind a thought then comfort would come into play so decided on the double cab. I dont think it will be too much of a pain to put one bike in with the tailgate down, so sacrificed the tailgate up with the smart cab for the more roomy and comfortable double cab. Another important reason which Phil mentioned. It gives you more space and security to lock your gear in.
Now I had settled on the Vigo for the very reason that its been king of the pick-ups for ages, reliability and resale value. Now madjbs threw the Ford Ranger into the mix. I looked at it previously but didn't really pay attention to the details. After reading all the latest reviews in more detail it appears to be a pretty awesome pick-up, in-fact its way ahead of its competitors, including the Vigo. So the bottom line is I need to test drive both the Vigo and Ranger, see them in the flesh before making further judgement. I only hope they have the 4x4 models in the show rooms that im interested in. You know what these Thai dealerships are like, they expect you to buy something without test driving it.

There was a good review in some Australian website which compared all the latest pickups. The Ford and Mazda (virtually the same truck) won hands down.

The Mazda will be also worth looking at, it is cheaper than the ford but is missing a couple of the features like 6 airbags, beer cooler and reverse camera. The back end of it is also pretty ugly and the front also looks ugly in photos but is actually ok in real life. The Mazda also seems to be easier to get your hands on without delay.

Phil that's a great idea. Did you get that fabricated locally? And how do you get the bike up there, do you use your ramp at the side of it?
Was there alot of chopping of the bumper and chassis?

I have a Mitsu four door auto and I am pleased with it. It can take a bike or two easily and then you also have loads of room in the cab. Recently I was even able to carry an Englisman with a badly broken leg across the back seats in reasonable comfort ( for me at least ) although I did have to take the child seat out. The new Mitsu now has the VG turbo and 178 bhp as well as a fancy gearbox with full auto for the wife and a tiptronic mode for yourself. I saw an article in a German magazine and the Mitsu came out tops in crash tests and on the slalom course. The Vigos seemed the most likely to tip over. I also know a guy who had one of his customers slide a KLX into a Vigo with minimal damage to the bike but a surprising amount to the panels on the Vigo.
If you drive down the Maejo road toward the city and cross over the Ruamchok/Rimping intersection, there is the Mitsu dealer on the right and a bit further down on the left is the new Ford dealership with quite a few Rangers parked outside. Good luck anyway.

They have said it will be August before it arrives! Im in no rush though.

Hey jon, thanks for the info. The Mitsu sounds like a great pick-up too, glad your happy with it. Ive settled on the Ranger, not everyone's cup of tea but it does it for me. The wifey found the Ford dealership today and payed them a visit, thanks for the directions anyway.

PS... "Carry an Englishman in reasonable comfort" you say......I would have strapped him across the front bull bar! would have saved removing the child seat! hil

Yes the 3.2, 200 horses was hard to ignore! im now torn between Chili Orange or Metropolitan Grey, got until tomorrow to decide.The orange is outrageous and sporty looking but the novelty may wear off too quickly. The grey is, well, grey...is neutral and looks well, Metropolitan, and the appeal won't fade.

Definitely mate, that sounds great fun. Plenty more options become available when you can chuck a bike or two in the back of a pick-up and head to new territories.

There is an orange/red coloured Ranger on ramps outside the new Ford place. I see it everyday. It is a pretty striking colour and certainly stands out. It reminds me of an Austin Allegro colour.
But what about how it would look with a KTM on the back? The two colours might clash! White or grey might be a safer choice as most colours work well with them.

I wouldn't buy anything based on resale value, I buy stuff because of how it performs while I have it! Anyway, the resale value of this model Vigo will be severely hit when Toyota come out with their new model in 2 years, so it's horses for courses.

The Ford Dealership offered 350K for my 7 years old Chevy Colorado as a trade in. So the Vigo that's mentioned above, how much would that be worth in 2 years time (to bring it in line with my Chevies age). Don't think there would be much in it. So going by the rule of thumb that the Vigo is one of the best pickups in Thailand and the Colorado at the bottom end of the scale, re-sale value seems pretty negligible.

These military Humvee's can be bought in Thailand, look very basic so might be surprisingly cheap.

-Put a locking box bolted inside it for all your gear. I'm trying to find out how much they are in Thailand, any guesses before we find out?

Don't ask why, it's a long story, 2006 I brought the same 4x4 double cab for 872,000 put 3 years good motoring and even had a few dings from tesco's & big c & still managed to get 500,500 for it as a trade in.
