Due to some rainy weather, we were able to take a look at the new Xayaboury to Kasi link up road. If you enter at the Nan/ Muan Nguen, Laos border, its a great way to get east to R 13, all sealed tarmac.

You have to go NE of Xayaboury, across the new Mekong River bridge to pick up the new road, which is then about 70km SE to Kasi on R 13

This now goes on the must do list, is there a "good" time of year and a time to avoid?

This is getting spooky Phil, we seem to have the same eye for scenery shots, this isn't the first time.

Now that road's fully paved it must be so much fun.

End of June to October would be when the SW monsoon would be pumping rain into the region.

Even earlier than that. Monsoon starts in May, so mid-May onwards is already going to be wet. After early October it starts to get dry again and by mid-late October there's very little if any rain, mostly sunny.

So I'd say the worst times are between mid-May to the first week of October. However, there can still be occasional lengthier sunny and dry days too, even during the monsoon period.
