Medical Situation in Vientiane
21/01/2011 Stephan
Unfortunately, the local hospitals are still a “no-go” for foreigners due their lack of the most basic equipment. Most expats in Vientiane visit either the French Embassy Medical Centre or the Medical Clinic at the Australian Embassy. While the Australian Clinic is only accessible during the official opening times of its Embassy, the French Clinic, located near to the Waterpark, offers 24 hour on-call emergency service and doctors also make house calls.
The French Medical Centre includes medical consulations, laboratory analyses / pathology, dental care, physiotherapy, speech therapy and psychotherapy. The Centre does not accept appointments for medical consultations so you just have to walk in. We have received great feedback from expats using their services, particularly from parents with smaller children.
For life-threatening emergencies and surgical operations, it’s best to cross the Mekong River and go to one of the Thai hospitals in Nongkhai (Wattana Hospital), Udon Thani (AEK International Hospital) or Bangkok (BNH, Bumrungrad)

Alliance International Medical Centre
10/06/2011 Cameron
The Alliance International Medical Centre is the newest medical centre in Vientiane. The clinic, located at the brand new Honda Centre on Luang Prabang Rd just before the airport, is part of a venture coordinated between the New Chip Xeng company of Laos and Wattana Hospital Group of Thailand. This alliance has worked out well and the facility, aesthetically speaking, is the height of modernity. Its sleekly designed floors and sparkling clean waiting rooms give a great first impression, as do the well trained staff.
The Alliance International Medical Centre, is open for business but will not be fully operational until July this year when the centre hopes to have its official opening. Alliance will soon be offering Diabetes and Hypertension specialists, Pediatrics and child development specialists, a women’s clinic, optical specialists, a skin care center and health check-up centre. The facilities at the centre include a pharmacy, laboratory, x-ray equipment, ultrasound and mammogram equipment and echo-cardiogram equipment.
Most current doctors on staff are from Thailand, with some from Laos and many have been educated overseas. The rest of the staff, including nurses, pharmacists, lab staff and even receptionists have undergone extensive training at the Wattana Hospital in Nong Khai. An appointment is not necessary for a general consultation, however visits to specialists will require some advance notice. Price wise, Alliance is quite competitive. Patients can undergo a full Health Checkup (standard) for as low as $80 USD, whilst a series of infant vaccines costs $380 USD. The centre plans to open a small café at the bottom floor alongside a pharmacy and an eyewear outlet, whilst at the top floor, affording a view of the Mekong river, the centre plans to open a health and beauty spa.
As Alliance has only recently opened they are still in the process of working out agreements with various insurance companies, but expats who visit the clinic will be able to make payments by Visa or Mastercard. An ordinary consultation will cost around USD $35 and it will be possible to undergo a full health checkup without travelling to Udon Thani or Bangkok. The Alliance International Medical Centre’s Opening Hours are Monday to Saturday 08:00 to 20:00. You can call customer service on 021 513 095 or fax on 021 513 096. To make an enquiry or find out about doctors’ timetables send an email to info@aimclao.com.
The centre is located at the Honda New Chip Xeng Centre on Souphanouvong Rd, Wattaiyai Thong, Sikhottabong District, Vientiane Capital.
