Mae Jo, Chiang Mai Sunday Motorcycle Market

If you're looking to do an extended, small engined motorcycle tour in SE Asia, it's worth considering buying a second hand motorcycle and selling it after your tour is finished, it could work out considerably cheaper than renting.

One of the best places to source a motorcycle for this purpose would be the Mae Jo Sunday motorcycle market, which is about 5km north of Chiang Mai, Thailand's old city.

About 90% of the bikes are scooters (100-140cc) but you also will find some unusual bike there too. A friend recently bought a Honda Transalp 400 here, which was a great buy.

It's quite easy to find, you need to get onto R11/ superhighway ring road around Chiang Mai & then take R 1001 north for about 3 km to the big Mcdonalds sign. 20 meters after the McDonalds sign take a left at the 7-11 and the bike market is 100 meters down the soi (side road).

FYI most of the sellers at Maejo on Sunday are at the San Patong "Buffalo Market" on Saturday also. It's basically the same selection.

Alex --where is the San Patong "Buffalo Market"? Sounds worth a visit too.

Head south on the 108 past Hang Dong and just into San Patong and it will be set up on both sides of the road on Saturday morning. Or just ask any Thai about "????????" and they'll laugh and point you in the right direction. It used to be a farmer's market for selling cattle I think so some older people still call it by that name.

I haggled a guy at Maeojo down to 8,000 on an older Dream a few weeks ago but IMO these markets aren't places to get good prices. Everyone shows up there expecting to turn a profit so you get good selection but you're better off hitting the classifieds for good deals.
