Large Ancient Buddha Statue recovered from the Mekong

Bokeo province has accomplished to rescue a large ancient Buddha statue, dating back over 400 years, from the Mekong River, Tonpheung district. The mission was completed on June 6, after a three-day effort to rescue, said a provincial official.

The Buddha statue has been discovered in the Mekong River, about 100-200 metres far from the river bank, by a fisherman during a fishing session in April this year. After he informed the local authorities of Homyen village, they have forwarded information to district and provincial authorities who immediately activated to rescue the Buddha statue for preservation. "On June 3, the authorities concerned in cooperation with locals and monks of Homyen village brought a shovel truck and a raft boat to carry out the rescue of the discovered Buddha statue from the Mekong River," said Mr Somsack Phetlengsy, a technical staff of Provincial Information, Culture and Tourism Division.

The ancient 2.40 X 2.50 m Buddha statue made of bricks was found in the laying position and its head and limbs have been broken and discharged from its body and sitting basement. In addition, more than 60 Buddha images and amulets, all of them in incomplete conditions have also been found nearby.

All discoveries, he presumed, have been made in the era of Souvannakhomkham because this area was believed to be part of the ancient city of Souvannakhomkham, spreading over Chiang Saen district of Thai Chiang Rai province, and Tonpheung district of Laos's Bokeo province. Presently the Buddha images are well preserved in Vat Homyen temple.
