The problem with using your android phone unplugged as a navigation device is that the 3g and wifi navigation triangulation use huge amounts of battery power.
I was talking to a gentleman today that has been using his android phone extensively as a navigation device & he tells me the GPS app called "GPStest" saves huge amounts of battery usage as it turns off the 3g and wifi navigation triangulation and JUST uses ONLY the phone's GPS sensor to get a position fix. I've just downloaded it to try it, the app icon looks like the one below (there are 2 apps with this name, make sure you download the correct app).
