Lone Rider
Blokes Who Can
Day Trip to Check the North Thailand GPS Map
Time is running fast and the new riding season will be soon upon us - reason to do a quick check on the condition of some of the roads and tracks shown on the map so that any changes deemed necessary can be shown in the next update (due sometime in October). So it was a long day again and some 600 km. in the old truck in the area north and northwest of Chiangrai. No time for pictures along the way so just a few quick snapshots of the area covered and some "attractions" visited along the way.
The route: Rd 118, 3037, 3044, 3010, 1089, 4044 (part), 1234, 1130, 1089, 1, 1151, 1207, 1211, 118 and quite a few roads with no number.
The waterlevel in the reservoirs are quite low - here the Mae Sruai Reservoir
The Corn/Maize harvest is in full swing and the dead leaves of the corn cobs are flying everywhere before being burnt
Clear skies and nice views
Wat Tha Ton seen from a distance of about 17 kilometers while driving on road 3037 north of Wawi
A new stupa is being constructed a bit north of the Kok River off Rd 3010
The last part of Rd 3037 goes steep down to Ban Mae Salak. The road which in places is badly potholed is now completely paved although the latest version of the ESRI/Garmin GPS map still shows it as partly unpaved
The last time I rode the 1130 it was very badly potholed but yesterday it was generally very good although it is not widely used and the vegetation along the road has resulted in that only 3 out of the 6 meter wide road is usable at the moment.
On the way back I tried to go to Phrathat Mon Phrachao Lai (N19.20715 E99.49146) west of Mae Kachan. However, the track was too slippery as it had rained heavily just before I went up there so I had to abandon my attempt. Went instead to have a look at the Huay Mae Chedi reservoir and notice a new road going up from the dam to the south.
At the end of the new road there was a stupa (N19.18543 E99.48957) in the middle of the forest. The stupa seemd to be visited frequently as there were quite a few fruit offerings
On the way down from the stupa the road went to the Learning Center (N19.18009 E99.49049). The Center seems to be not widely used or maybe even abandoned as there was no one around and the grounds seemed to be a bit overgrown.
On the way down from the Learning Center I had a quick look at Wat Phratat Mae Chedi before heading home.
