Hello all. The next Chiang Rai Bikers Day Ride has been called by Ian and he has laid out a nice route. His post with details is posted below. You are all welcome to join in.

Our group is very diverse with all sizes and styles of riders, riding and bikes. We often have bikes from 100 cc scooters all the way up to 1,800 cc Harleys. Fast riders do their thing, maybe take in some extra kilometers and then meet up with all at the lunch point. Slower riders (me) do their thing and maybe see a bit more of the scenery. From the start point, we all move out at the same time and usually, riders quickly find themselves riding in much smaller groups that fit their own style and speed. People stop and take pictures, smoke breaks, rest breaks or anything else they want, whenever and wherever they want. There is no pressure to ride as a herd. The ride is as much a social outing where you can meet other people, make new friends and discover others who enjoy the same style of riding. Pit stops, hiding from the occasional cloudburst, getting lost and any other deviations are welcomed with this group.

Our start point is located on this map. http://g.co/maps/p48c7 It is the PTT petrol station and Amazon coffee shop on the super highway in Chiang Rai. They have petrol, air for your tires, rest rooms, a 7-11 and of course, coffee. Here is Ian's post. I'll try to get his pics inserted in the proper places:

Hi Everyone,

Welcome to the Chiang Rai Bikers monthly day ride. Invitation to all. Bring your friends, the more the merrier. This next ride planned as follows;

The Ride; Run the 1155 north.
Date; Sunday 3rd June 12
Meeting point; Amazon Coffee Shop, PTT station, highway 1 in Chiang Rai.
Meeting time; 08:30
Ride departs; 09:00
Distance; Approx 230 klms.
Route; Anti-clockwise loop.

As we did a loop to the west of CR last month and a run to the south, the month before, let's try a loop to the east this month. The 1155 is a great road. Heading north, the mountains of Pu Chee Fah are on your right and there is a parallel line of mountains to your left. Beautiful scenery as the road follows round and over hills between the mountains, through hill tribe villages.

ChiangRaieast1155loopmap.jpg

Head out of CR on 1152 to Phaya Mengrai. After passing the Nong Luang lake/reservoir (sorry, I dont know which) and the turn to Chaiyapruek, turn right on the small road across to Huai Kang and join 1174 south. Turn left again across the small roads through to Thoeng. Turn left on 1020, head east past Pee, turning left onto the great 1155 north. Head all the way north, about 67 klms, dont turn off to Pu Chee Fah anywhere (save that for another day...). This road has a few small villages for drinks stops. Being a small twisty road, it's best enjoyed at a moderate pace. When you get to Wiang Kaen, turn right on the small road into Wiang Kaen itself and follow that road about 14 klms, through Huai Lak to Gaeng Pa Dai at the very end of the Kong river on the Thai side. The Pa Dai restaurant is at the end of this road, where we can all meet up again for a late lunch.

After Wiang Kaen, on the small road past Huai Lak, you should go through this gateway.

Then turn right here and follow the road through to the end past a little resort to where the restaurant is, nearly at the end of the road.

After lunch, back along the small road to Wiang Kaen then right on the 1155, along the Mekong a little, a couple more viewpoint stops on this great tarmac twisty bit, then the road swings around to the south again. At Tha Charoen, turn right to Si Donchai, then left on a small road across to Bahn Wai and left on 1174. Follow that road down to Phaya Mengrai and right on 1152 back to Chiang Rai.

See you all on Sunday 3rd June. Looking forward to it.
Best wishes
Ian

Good Rd choice too.. Some lovely bits of that, tho probably not sportbike territory.

quite fast roads to be honest, he's missed out the really slow bits around puu chii faa. should be suitable for everyone including the sportbikes.

Dunno.. Done those rds on the 400 and was ideal.. Doubt the 900 would enjoy them too much..

Will see whats on the schedule tho, feel like a few days exploring at the moment.. And would like to drop into CR saddlebags to find a good tank bag.

I hope my MTS is in order by then, would love to join you guys for this.

I hope this turns into a regular thing as I look forward to joining in once I return

Hello all.

I hope you can all make it.

Yes, as of this point, I think it is a regular thing. We stopped monthly rides last year as the rainy season came on but there were still a lot of beautiful riding days during that time. So, we won't stop this year. If a date gets rained out, it will be pushed back a little bit until we have a better forecast but the ride will still go forward.

We maintain a mailing list for all whom wish to receive the latest Chiang Rai Bikers Day Ride updates. If any of you wish to be on the list for these e-mails, PM or e-mail me. We do not send out jokes, political views or any other other junk. The list is for day ride related info only.

So far, for this ride, it looks like we will have a larger group than last time. Still, our riders tend to find themselves in smaller groups as the ride starts out and everyone ends up with people who ride their speed or their style. We end up strung out pretty far along the route, with smaller groups riding together instead of one big pack of riders. This seems to make for an enjoyable ride for everyone, with nobody feeling pressure to do more than they are comfortable with and nobody feeling restricted by how slowly others are riding. I personally tend to hang back with the slowest bikers and spend a lot of time gawking about at the countryside and stopping to take a smoke or a cup of coffee where I feel like it.

So, no matter what bike you ride or how you ride it, you'll likely be part of a ride that fits you, even if your style is riding by yourself and just joining up for the coffee stops and lunch breaks. The breaks are nice because you get to spend some time getting to know other riders and sooner or later, you'll end up forming some friendships with others who have some of the same interests as you. I always tend to learn quite a bit of new info when I spend time with you guys and I look forward to that each month.

Hopefully, we'll have some Udon guys this time, in addition to the CM guys. It is a three day ride for those guys but a good opportunity to see some more of the north and find some new roads to add to their logs and future trip plans. Most people learn something new about this route or that route, but just as important, they also discover a new turn, a new shortcut or new landmark that needs further exploring on a future ride. It seems each ride I go on brings more questions than answers as I see more and more opportunities pass by on the right and the left.

Set the date aside, guys, if you can and bring your buds. The Chiang Rai Bikers Day ride is about the most laid back group ride you could hope for. We have nowhere to be and all day to get there.

If anyone needs overnight room info for CR, let me know.

Hi Phil

Have you got a route file for that map you sketched out there?

Should be an interesting day out !!

Ally

I put together a route file that I can email. ***Change of plan....see below***
Please PM me if you are interested (with email address) as I cannot upload to this site from the house.
For some reason gmail does the trick.
Go figure.

If I recall correctly the restaurant in Padai at the end of the road is in a beautiful location. I suspect its a Thai only menu and specialise in mekhong catfish dishes. No problem for Ian as he can read Thai Script.

If anyone doesn't want a big meal there are a few Noodle shops in the village of Heuy Luk the last village before paddai , if you take the left fork instead of the right. it will lead you to the noodle shops, there's one on the left just before you come to the police box by the boat slipway. continue down the slipway and there are a couple of floating Noodle shops that serve the river traffic also. I would leave the bikes at the top though.

So a bowl of 'Krateow' will be my lunch for the princely sum of 20baht

Then perhaps a Leo later at padDai watching how the other half Live :|

Nice pics. Nice folks. Nice time. Nice weather. Thanks to all for coming. I hope you all can make it for more of these rides. It is always the best day on my month just because of the people.

Another fun one by the looks of it and I am really looking forward to joining one when I return

I quite agree. I hope to be resident in Chiang Mai within a couple weeks (work contracts permitting) and am looking forward to solo and group rides covering the whole area! Been a lover of Northern Thailand road riding for many years. Getting my fat arse over some skinny lil off-roader will take a bit longer!

A few more photo's of the ride.

Just about to set off

At this viewpoint, there is a small restaurant that David Bailey swears does the best som tum in Thailand, might be worth a try on that recommendation (he lives in Chiang Khong)

Yep, good stuff there Phil and many thanks for giving me your CRF250L so that I could share the enjoyment of the ride.
Great part of Thailand and good company.
Thanks also to Ally for being an excellent riding companion and to Martin and Khun Woraphat from Saddlebags (and the others) who organised this event. :DD
