Herman itching to take his newly arrived Cagiva 900 for a long ride, we all rode north from Chiang Mai, wanting to take unusual routes using the border. Gordie from Phrao met up with us on R 107 on his BMW 1200 GS.

Once north of Fang & before Mae Ai, we took a loop westwards on R 1314 which loops around the Myanmar border

Herman's Cagiva was smoking downhill (burning oil), so regular oil checks were needed

Next, north-bound up R 1089 to R 1234 through Doi Mae Salong to another Myanmar border road

When you get to this border road, you really are on the Myanmar border with nothing in the way, there is a series of Thai military checkpoints because of this

Not really sure why these playing cards were confiscated as there were no obscene or politically incorrect pictures on them, must be due to the Thai's strict ban on gambling

Back into Thailand and off we go, a quick check on the Cagiva's oil again

There's currently about 4 km of unmade road on R 1089 south of Doi Mae Salong. Its been graded and shouldn't even be a problem for a sports bike

Herman's Cagiva developed a battery problem these guys were able to prove it with a car battery, so this will have to go in the pick-up

Jeff- That road is a must-do, a really great way to get north to DMS or Mae Sai, now tarmac all the way with a couple of road works.
