This is getting out of hand
Crikey... who would've thought old mate Ian had this much range?
Sure, the trailers make it look like a bloke with a magnificent set of mutton chops, a Coopers Pale Ale, and enough flowing locks to make a shampoo commercial jealous. But once you settle in with your popcorn, you're hit with a performance that'd have the critics carrying on like galahs.
This isn't just Helen as the face that launched a thousand motorcycle clubs. Nah. Ian delivers a surprisingly moving portrayal of a bloke... er... woman... trapped in the middle of a bloody catastrophe. You can feel every ounce of guilt, every impossible choice, and the crushing weight of a war that's chewed up kingdoms because everyone else lost the plot.
One minute you're laughing because Helen's knocking back a Coopers while the Greek fleet's bobbing around offshore. Next minute you're staring into the middle distance wondering whether humanity ever learns a flaming thing.
Russell Crowe reportedly called it, "Pretty bloody good."
The Academy is rumoured to be introducing a brand-new category:
Best Performance by an Australian Publican Playing an Ancient Greek Beauty.
Five stars.
