Elephant festival at the heart of Xayaboury

The annual elephant festival will take place in the heart of Xayaboury province next month, aiming to celebrate the importance of elephants to the people of the area. In the past, the festival was held in different districts around the province, which created some difficulties for tourists, so from now on it has been decided that the festival will take place in central Xayaboury. With a more accessible location, organisers are confident they will be able to attract more tourists to come to the festival, which runs from February 17-19.

First held back in 2007, the festival has become one of the most important events to raise awareness about elephant conservation and their significance for the country, which was once known as the land of a million elephants. This year, some 65 elephants are expected to show up at the festival to walk tourists around the town, taking part in traditional Baci ceremonies and demonstrating how the elephants engage with their work. Last year more than 100,000 people joined the festival, which generated around 28 billion kip for the local economy.

Note by LR - Not sure if the Vientiane Times has the dates right (last year the festival was held from 17-19 February) as another website gives the dates as 14-16 February (Friday till Sunday) so it probably is best to contact the Xayaboury Provincial Tourism Department at 030-5180095 or 074-213107
