Hotels are pretty booked up in the town of Dan Sai, if you're going don't get cute on booking somewhere to sleep there.

I'll still be in Borneo (back the 24th), but I would have loved to join this group of guys going there offroad:

The Rungyen resort still has rooms 1,600 - 2,000 bht , quite a fancy resort 23KM outside Dan Sai town.

4 of us are leaving Chiang Mai EARLY Friday (22nd June 2012) for Dan Sai, probably underway 0700am on 650cc bikes. If anyone wants to head down there send me a PM or stop by.

I would love to but sadly I cannot - Family matters take priority, you can only imagine how miffed I feel.

We're leaving Chiang Mai for Phi Ta Khon (Dan Sai, west of Loei) from Macro's car park on the super-highway / R11 at 0700am (Fri 22nd June) if anyone else is looking to go down there.

Looks like Latree and her husband are also coming on the Triumph Rocket trike.

Hi I am Chang Noi riding a Versys and living in Khon Kaen.
I will be on my way to Dan Sai at Friday very very early (breakfast on Phu Hin Rong Khla).
No idea where to stay overnight (I do not like planning) .... but I am sure I will have a nap somewhere.
I think some other guys from KK and Khorat are also coming.

Chang Noi

Looks like Dan Sai rooms are fully booked, you may get a room in Loei

Looking forward to seeing your photos ;) I watch your blog !!

Nice photos.

If you've got time this is a really fun way between Chiang Mai and Dan Sai - 560km. R 1268 along the Laos border is a beautiful riding road through some great scenery. Lots of cows around to be wary of.

Hi Ivo,

There are lots of hotels/resorts along the road from Phu Ruea to Dan Sai (Rd 203 and Rd 2013) so you should have no problems finding a place to sleep although the closer you get to Dan Sai the more difficult it may become. One group of riders from Chiangmai will stay in the Rungyen (Rangyen) Resort - http://www.rungyenresort.com/eng/map.html - which is south of the 203 and east and about 22 km from Dan Sai. The coordinates are N17.32694 E101.28322

Have fun,

Auke

I saw the Phi Ta Khon Festival in 2010...
and found it to be one of the most colorful and _bizarre_ of the many community festivals I've seen.
Maybe, only exceeded by the very colorful, yet not bizarre, Shan New Years Festival, at Thoed Thai
Definitely, each are worthwhile visits!

An amazing festival as usual, just got back. Here's some photo's from the 2012 Dan Sai Phi Ta Khon festival

This child was having so much fun with his family

Excellent photos there Phil, I have to agree with Ron, the last photo just goes that extra mile for me ;)

Ally

I hope the current 'Culture Minister' doesn't see some of these photos Phil; if so this wonderful Festival is at risk of being permanently cancelled!
Wonderful event.
