Pleasure Colin...I wanted to get to the bottom of the KLR650 question anyways so, since everyone only knows bits and pieces, or so it seemed, I started digging a bit about what the real issues were. Kawasaki explained that their main issue between the 2008 year model and 2010 year model was that the Catalytic converter (introduced in 2008 to meet emission standards) was "being overloaded" by the excessive oil contained in the exhaust. They redesigned the piston rings (slimmer and tighter) and were able to significantly reduce oil burning which allowed the bike to meet emission standards again. The 2010 model year went into showrooms in 2009, hence the unclear history about when E3 emission standards was met again.
