Garmin Montana 650 GPS

Guess that this reply should have been in the thread on the 60CSX as Alex had problems with the GPS not writing the tracks to the SD card in his 60CSX GPS.

Yes sorry about that

However Matt, I was reading about problems with Oregon screens locking up due to the circuitry on side of digitizer/LCDs.
As yours is intermittent, maybe its the beginning of the end.
But the new Oregon screens dont have the same problem, and Montana LCDs are about $75

Matt's is still under warranty?

Well, its a Montana 600 (personally don't want a camera in a GPS) and picked up the full Touratech package a few days ago: Garmin Montana 600 + Locking Mount & Cradle Package - Touratech-USA (<click link) and the lockable TT mount / cradle should overcome the shake, rattle and roll on China's roads.
Playing around with the Montana 600 in a car for the last few days and coming from the Garmin Zumo range, what a difference in screen and set-up possibilities, amazing....

ps: trying to get a decent topo map for China through some contacts, more on this later on....

Its the best user interface and display ive ever used for a gps and ive had lots of them....marine and non marine

Used the Garmin Montana 600 extensively for 4 weeks in California / USA and the last two weeks in Shanghai / Beijing (China) and what can I say with the new Garmin City Navigator China NT 2008 microSD-card everything is spot on without any offset.
Many GPS owners complain about a 400-500m offset in Mainland China with Garmin GPS units and the Garmin City Navigator China NT 2008 microSD-card

Did not like the way the lockable Touratech Mount should be installed onto the Ducati Multistrada with a steel bar and two screws and ordered a new GPS mount here: BikePenR <<< click web-link.
They have an importer / distributor for Thailand as well: BikePenR <<< click web-link.

TB, get the Amps mount, everyone seems to like it

Frozen Montana

Guy's my Montana 650 is giving me problems, it's been working fine until yesterday when it kept showing a memory full message even though i knew it was not full, but still booted up. Now the thing is locked up, it shows the Garmin boot screen and thats it, tried to do a hard reset but it will not respond, also tried boot up with and without the SD card and battery when hooked up to the Mac.

Any idea's ?

Howdy Bob.
Happened to me after I dropped it in Scotland.
Froze. (no pun intended)
But removing the battery for a while, praying and replacing the battery got it back to normal.

Tried that, looks like it screwed just in time for the riding season :(

thats a shame bob.
I'm now worried about mine not being waterproof
maybe I can seal round the screen with silicon RTF

I've got a nuvi 500 for sale, but its in cambodia

I dont think it was water, although i did go through some pretty deep stuff the other day, i think it's more of a hardware crap out.

I'm not even gonna ask why you have a GPS in Cambodia Alex ;)

Now i have my nice new Garmin Montana back from GPS City, have any of you lateral thinkers come up with an idea to protect the camera lens on the unit, my old old got pretty scratched cleaning off the dust before taking pictures. Garmin should have come up with some idea but so far, nothing :excuseme:

I see a lot of discussion in this thread about various ways to mount the Montana so thought you might find the way I did it of interest...

I have used Garmin GPS V receivers in Touratech mounts for going on 10 years now and have always been pleased with the quality of the mount. So, when I purchased a new Montana 650 over a year ago I was eager to see if Touratech had a mount for it.

Well, they do, and it is a marvel of engineering, but decided it was not for me. First, the cost is pretty steep at $180 and you still need to buy the Garmin AMPS cradle for another $30 if you want to power it from the bike. Second, it seems big and unwieldy and the big key lock tumored onto it seems a bit unnecessary considering the Montana can be secured into the Garmin cradle. All in all, it seemed targeted to the large adventure bike folks and not a good fit for my use.

So, already having an investment in Touratech mounts I set out to see what I could do to make it work. I think the end result turned out pretty good.

I started with this mount, which is the "extra suspension" version of the Touratech GPS V mount:
touratechgarmin.jpg

This mount is of two piece construction which made the project possible. I removed the GPS V specific portion of the mount, and was left with the suspension portion of the mount. All I needed to do was adapt the Garmin AMPS cradle. This was fairly simple, requiring only a piece of aluminum to accommodate the upper two screws of the Garmin cradle. The bottom two screws matched up with holes already in the Touratech mount. The aluminum also needed a half circle cut out of it so it would clear the upper suspension portion of the mount.

I have used this setup on many rides long and short and it seems to perform well. The Montana is well isolated from vibrations and shock but does not shake or move in any way that affects the viewing of the screen. This is bouncing all over the Philippines and at times on pretty bad terrain. No major crashes but the few spills it has been present for show that if anything does make contact with it that it pretty much will just spin around on the bar and the mount itself will take the brunt of the force. The mount already had a few battle scars on it from it's previous life carrying the GPS V.

I did not make any photos of the construction process, but in the pictures below you can see the end result.
