Two days in the dusty wake of Capt. Slash.

For years I have been reading his ride reports and seen Thailand in thousands of pictures through his lens. Finally I got to meet the man, and got to ride with him for 2 dusty days. A pity I did not have more time. Another time maybe?

A sunny morning and we are heading up to Santisuk in Nan. Colin want to see if he can link up some trials from last year.

2013-12%20Ride%20with%20Colin%202.jpg

First stop and Colin as the Gentleman he is, is checking if I am happy with his pace.

2013-12%20Ride%20with%20Colin%203.jpg

Most of the farmland here looks to be used for corn to feed the live stock. Colin having a chat and takes some pictures.

2013-12%20Ride%20with%20Colin%204.jpg

Time for lunch in a shaded area. And true enough, the onion came up.

2013-12%20Ride%20with%20Colin%205.jpg

Another stop in the shade!

2013-12%20Ride%20with%20Colin%206.jpg

Nope, not a trial through here.

2013-12%20Ride%20with%20Colin%207.jpg

This trail ended in the middle of a very steep corn field. But Colin seams to be an expert in turning around.

2013-12%20Ride%20with%20Colin%208.jpg

Some of the jungle wanted to come back with me.

2013-12%20Ride%20with%20Colin%209.jpg

Up another hill looking for trials.

2013-12%20Ride%20with%20Colin%2010.jpg

Never seen this on a car before, but needed in this are for sure.

2013-12%20Ride%20with%20Colin%2011.jpg

As we stopped at something that looked like a dead end, we saw a pickup driving into the corn field. Colin had a track from last year just around the hill and hoped it would link up. We did not get further than this.

2013-12%20Ride%20with%20Colin%2012.jpg

At the end of the day we had some of Tonys great food. Thanks Tony.

2013-12%20Ride%20with%20Colin%2013.jpg

Next morning Colin found some new "race track" where it was a gravel road last year. Only in Nan!

2013-12%20Ride%20with%20Colin%2014.jpg

And this was what Colin was looking for.

2013-12%20Ride%20with%20Colin%2015.jpg

Checking trough all maps on the GPS to see if any trail was not on any map. We followed anything not on the map in hope to link up trials.

2013-12%20Ride%20with%20Colin%2016.jpg

It was more dusty than this.

2013-12%20Ride%20with%20Colin%2017.jpg

Two men in their prime, dirty, dusty and happy just as only boys can be.

2013-12%20Ride%20with%20Colin%2018.jpg

Nan is spectacular on both paved and unpaved roads. Not everyone get to see both. But there is always Capt Slash ride reports for those who don't want to do both!

2013-12%20Ride%20with%20Colin%2019.jpg

In the middle of nowhere we found a man trimming the edges of a trial. He ends up in Colins camera too.

2013-12%20Ride%20with%20Colin%2020.jpg

X max is coming up, and Colins xmas wishes seams to come through. Roads everywhere.

2013-12%20Ride%20with%20Colin%2021.jpg

A happy man after linking yet another trial.

2013-12%20Ride%20with%20Colin%2022.jpg

A rubber tree. Now we know where the next condom is coming from.

2013-12%20Ride%20with%20Colin%2023.jpg

A "single and half" trial link up another loop. Very steep hills.

2013-12%20Ride%20with%20Colin%2024.jpg

Not so much dust up this hill.

2013-12%20Ride%20with%20Colin%2025.jpg

Not sure what this guy was hunting but the barrel was very long.

2013-12%20Ride%20with%20Colin%2026.jpg

While Colin walked up to see if this steep trial lead anywhere I cleared away the bags of corn.

2013-12%20Ride%20with%20Colin%2027.jpg

It did not, and Colin is coming down faster than planned.

2013-12%20Ride%20with%20Colin%2028.jpg

Beautiful view in Nan.

2013-12%20Ride%20with%20Colin%2029.jpg

Yet another picture is taken.

2013-12%20Ride%20with%20Colin%2030.jpg

Last check for the day. This ended in a dead end too.

2013-12%20Ride%20with%20Colin%2031.jpg

The sun is setting and brings out the warm colours.

2013-12%20Ride%20with%20Colin%2032.jpg

Colin riding into the sunset after what he called another productive day. Back to Tony and a special order of curry was waiting for us.

Thanks for letting me tag along. I truly enjoyed it.

Looks like you had a fantastic time Oddvar, Colin is probably the most knowledgeable person alive in respect of mapping roads and trails in north Thailand and always no hassles when riding. Great report. I like the geo-tagging on the photo's, very useful.

WoW. Nice job. This time of the year the temperature must be perfect.

Yes, can you tell us more about the imbedded co-ordinates please Oddvar?
Glad you could share time with Colin; nice job.

I use one camera with a GPS, but for my Canon/other cameras I use the Track the Garmin GPS make and join that up in Aperture. Important that the time on the camera is fairly correct and that you remember to adjust the time zone. GPS tracks are in GMT zone.
There are many free GEO tagging software out there doing the same for you poor guys who have not discovered the MAC yet.:D
So as long you have a GPS for navigation that create a track there is no need to buy an expensive camera with GPS. The GPS eats batteries. Thats why I have 3 battery for one day!
An plug-in in Aperture makes it look good too. Not sure what software is available for PC.

Thanks Oddvar.
My good Sony camera includes a GPS but, as you say, it murders the battery.

Great job Oddvar, it is indeed an experience riding with Colin, long may he continue to supply us all with tracks to explore :worthy:

It was great fun riding together Oddvar and thank you for coming to Nan and teaming up for two days of riding
