The exquisite beauty of Halong Bay is certainly no secret. There are some around the world who have heard of Halong Bay Cruises without knowing where, or what, they actually are. Unique Halong Bay has long been on the list of places to see before you die- but is Halong actually as ‘unique’ as we think?

The Gulf of Tonkin is divided into at least three distinct bays: Halong Bay, Bai Tu Long Bay, and Lan Ha Bay. Lan Ha is usually visited from Cat Ba Island and is significantly smaller than Halong. But what about Bai Tu Long Bay? Spanning an area just as large as Halong and argued by most to be every bit as beautiful, Bai Tu Long increasingly seems to be the destination on people’s lips.
Being somewhat further from Halong City and Tuan Chau marina and port has been something of a mixed blessing for Bai Tu Long Bay. On the one hand there are far fewer junk boats, the Bay is significantly cleaner than Halong, and there is a greater sense of adventure. On the other hand, the lack of junks has also meant a lack of tourist sites and infrastructure- there is undoubtedly a lot more to see and do in Halong Bay than there is in Bai Tu Long Bay.
A quick glance at some Halong Bay reviews will show that some of the best Halong Bay Cruises were not actually in Halong at all but in Bai Tu Long Bay instead. A growing number of visitors are concerned less about ticking off the Halong Bay box and would prefer to explore something a little more undiscovered. They are looking for peace and quiet and are typically searching for that elusive feeling that they have the Bay to themselves.

A tour of Bai Tu Long Bay will certainly include some remarkable and secluded places for swimming and kayaking. With fewer boats (and fewer people), the feeling that you are seeing something really special is likely to be more intense and the trip may even be more memorable because of it. But there are far fewer caves to infiltrate, mountains to scale, and beaches to relax upon than there are in Halong Bay. You will also be missing out on the Halong Bay ‘hotspots’ such as Titov Island and Surprise Cave.
When deciding between Halong and Bai Tu Long, you really need to ask yourself what kind of person you are and the kind of travelling you most enjoy. And if you really can’t decide, you’ll just have to extend your trip and visit both!
