The "Chan Choey Noi" Ride to Laos

Most of us who ride in Laos will know the experience of being made feel welcome by the awesome reception we receive from the local villagers. The hundreds of children running to the road side, waving their arms village after village is an exceptional feeling to experience. At the same time, while riding through these villages, we do see (and some may even experience it in case a bike breaks down in the middle of nowhere) the differences between life in the villages with barefoot kids running around in tattered clothes with runny noses and the way we spend our own evenings during such trips with the need for a good place to sleep, a hot shower, a warm bed and enjoying a good meal with friends.

While we realize that we cannot (and probably should not) change everything we think that should be changed, there are a few things which we could possibly change. To help to improve the basic life of these villagers in a small way towards comfort and health, a few riders with the help of their friends and acquaintances got together to buy and deliver some warm clothes for a few of the poorest villages (6-8 mountain villages) on the roads we travel from time to time. For this year we chose the area south-east of Pha-Oudom on the dirt road between Houayxai and PakBeng and east of Hongsa on the dirt road from Hongsa to Luang Prabang.

The plan is to make this an annual "happening" and anyone who would like to give something back to the people we meet on our enjoyable travels in Laos, please feel free to let anyone of us know or, in case you have suggestions on what else could be done, please let us know also.

We (Mark, Alex, Justin, Phil and myself) left Chiangmai on the 1st of December on our way to Houayxai, spent the day of 2 December delivering cloths to 4 villages on the Houayxai to PakBeng road and on the third of December doing the same in 3 villages on the road from Hongsa to Luang Prabang. From here we continued our ways in various directions.

Day 1. After a stop in Pha-Oudom for a bite to eat and discussions with the staff from the District Education Department it was off to the first village.

Well done guys, some of those photos are really moving

Thanks for posting this very worthwhile ride report.

Those children look extremely deprived and I am sure what you transported and gave them was greatly appreciated.

Well done everyone involved.

Great words Auke, brilliantly written and described. For those out of the local area "Chan Chuay Noi" translates to " I Help a Little"
More than 60,000 bht was raised to purchase clothes and also people personally donated their used clothes.
Final count of clothes for this trip was
600- children pullovers
400- adult pullovers
320- children track pants
200- adult jeans
300- hats woollen beanies

Money spent- 51,500bht /1700usd
plus 4,000bht fora Lao's guide/translator his food accommodation and boat ticket return to Houei Xai.

Plus Phil also collected clothes from some people and himself and Som gave generously I don't know the clothes count Phil brought along.

Please have a close look at these Photo's and you will understand why giving something so simple as shirts, pants and pullovers means so much for these Laotians a luxury most of us take for granted.

Any person's that have not had the pleasure to visit Laos as yet, a thermometer doesn't relate how cold it can be, the high moisture contents it the air make the conditions very chilly.

I have been asked by FIM Asia to organise this as a tour event in the future, they have pledge to give us another 60k bht once I submit this story. If all goes to plan it will be a FIM tour event charity run set for the 1st of December every year through Thailand, Burma and Laos.
All welcome to join just give a little.

Hi Mark

How can people make a donation and more specifically where ?

Thanks

Ally

Hello Ally. All of this is very infant. We started to organise Chan Chuay Noi in early November, about 3 weeks before we made the drop.
Originally this was jut a personal initiative, something I felt I needed to do, these people are a big part of why I and many others enjoy Laos.
The original initiative started when I asked Auke. "Can he take clothes in his pickup on his next trip to Laos". Auke was more than willing and actually thought it so important that he set aside a special trip to do so. So on and So on people gave and become involved.
So to answer the question. I think this is possible, if all are agreed. Any cleaning out of cupboards and clothes donation could be dropped to Rider's Corner or myself in Maerim. Rather than try and store clothes for too long, Auke travels regularly to Laos, so if he is up for it, on each trip he might be able to do a small drop to a needy village at his discretion.
Then, annually starting in November we can collect money-try donations and do a second hand clothes shopping spree, as we did this year.
Personally what I would really like to happen where possible, is for people who feel a need to donate, have hands on involvement, and come to Laos on December 1st 2012.

This was a great idea Mr Rossi had - to do and organize this, quite astonishing the poverty right on our doorstep. A few more shots as we worked our way south east through the villages.

Awesome what you guys are doing. I'm keeping the Dec 1, 2012 date in my head, hopefully will be able to join in.

I think Mark is developing some ideas for next year to make it an enjoyable event for everyone. From talking to people who've seen the photo's, it seems there are many people that would like to be involved in one way or another next year for sure.

Way to go guys !!!!!!! We have all enjoyed so many trips to Laos, what a fantastic idea to give something back.

Great what you guys did, I would have loved to come along with you. Hope I can join on a next trip to Laos, never rode there yet.

Bravo gentlemen, bravo. A very moving post, some of the photos are really heartbreaking, but wonderful to see the smiles on the childrens' faces. They seem to overcome adversity with ease.

And great to run into all of you on Sunday night in Luang Prabang. Great to meet the people in person that you know from the boards.

Looking forward to participating/contributing next time.

Mike

Great stuff guys.. Count me in for next year.. Good to meet you in Luang Prabang..

Cheers

Day 2 of the "Chan Choey Noi" Ride - Pak Beng to Luang Prabang

We left quite early from Pak Beng as this would be another long day as we had to cross the Mekong twice.

Once past Hongsa, the road goes into the mountains and there are numerous stream crossings. Some of these have narrow bridges for people and bikes.
