Greatest sporting event in the world I reckon.
:DD to all the competitors.

Those new Honda 450s are just 'warming up'!

I notice Nasser Al-Attiyah (Qatar) #300 is driving a buggy this year.
He's usually one of the top contenders in the car section.
Interestedly, he won a silver medal in the London Olympics in shooting.
So if anyone pisses him off ........

Reminded me that the Somalians apologized at the London Olympics, as they thought the sailing and the shooting were one event. (slightly off topic).

Wow awesome to see riders from different offroad background taking part in the event!

For those who don't know Darryl Curtis is a extreme enduro rider, 2 time winner of the Roof of Africa, 3rd, 5th, 6th & 8th Overall at Romaniacs, 8 time finisher Erzberg Rodeo.

Kurt Caselli is the king of the WORCS series (world offroad championship series), which is like a mix of a big moto with some technical sections.

Chris Birch (Extreme Enduro rider etc. ) also took part last year with Darryl Curtis and a few other SA's.
Saw them talking in the back during an interview on Eurosport.

Havent followed coverage this year, so cant say if he is there, but I would imagine he is.
Edited: Nope he isnt, just saw his twitter feed.

Dakar Rally Competitor Sponsored by Pornographer

09/01/2013 | By: Dennis Chung1 Comment

"Looking for someone to cheer for in the 2013 Dakar Rally? Then how about Hugo Payen, a French racer competing on a Yamaha WR450F.
Payen is racing in his seventh Dakar Rally, with his best result a 48th place finish in 2011. As of this writing, Payen is 61st overall on Stage 5 of the Rally
after starting the day in the 67 spot.

Payen competes in a category called "Malles Moto" or "Motorcycle Trunk". That means he competes without a support team, relying only on storage trunks
of tools and supplies that race organizers transport from stage to stage. But that's not why Payen has drawn a lot of attention. It's because he's sponsored by porn.

Or to be more specific, Payen is sponsored by Marc Dourcel, a French producer of pornography. This is actually the third year Dourcel has sponsored Payen's Dakar effort.
Payen followed up his 48th-place result with a 60th-place result in 2012, both times on a motorcycle dressed in livery promoting Dourcel's work.
Last year, his bike featured an image of Russian-born French porn star Anna Polina.

This year, Payen will again race in Dourcel livery, this time with graphics featuring another adult film star, Claire Castel.
Payen says his goal is to finish in the top 30 but we're thinking his sponsor wouldn't mind if he finished 69th.
You know, because that's his race number."

From the media release...

On a 12th special stage marked by the joint strategy of general standings leader Cyril Despres and his provisional runner-up and team-mate, Ruben Faria, Dutchman Frans Verhoeven picked up his 4th stage victory on the Dakar and his first since 2011. In the general standings, Despres and Faria are solidly installed in the first two places ahead of "Chaleco" Lopez.

Despres and Faria control the general, Verhoeven takes advantage… Cyril Despres, third to start the day's special, decided to protect his team-mate Ruben Faria against the attacks of Chaleco Lopez who is always a threat on home soil. As a result, the general standings leader preferred to hold back a little and leave opening the tracks to his rivals, less skilled in navigation. The outcome was a more moderate pace to the race. This strategy paid off perfectly, because at the finishing line, Ruben Faria, tenth to start today, having quickly caught up with the stage leaders, achieved the second best time of the day, 1'38 behind Frans Verhoeven. The Dutchman, 12th to start, took advantage of clear tracks to really hit the gas, picking up his first victory on the Dakar 2013. Behind him, in spite of a painful shoulder following yesterday's fall, Spaniard Joan Barreda put in the day's 3rd best time, 16" in front of Alain Duclos, an excellent 4th on his Sherco.

In the general standings, Despres' and Faria's strategy also functioned flawlessly because the title holder remains untroubled in the lead, 5'39 ahead of his Portuguese team-mate who enjoyed the additional bonus of adding a further 3 minutes to the gap that separates him from Chaleco Lopez, 7th quickest today, now 13'40 behind the rally leader.

Yep, their official website results page has had a coronary.
